I just watched "My Name is Khan" and highly recommend it. I rented it from Netflix.

I saw that in the theater! I love Shah Rukh Khan...and I love the message...but I thought the movie itself was awful. Very preachy. Sorry, Rose. I bet it plays better on TV than on the big screen....

P.S. Isn't he super-cute?

I didn't find it preachy at all. On the contrary, I found it refreshing to see characters acting outside their stereotypes. No group was seen as being all bad or all good. I think that was the point: there are only two types of people as his mother said.

I enjoyed watching a movie that wasn't about nudity and car chases.

Watched this indie pic a couple of days ago, and really liked it - dvd from netflix, not on streaming yet.

The Yellow Handkerchief (2008) with Kristin Stewart, William Hurt and Maria Bello. Road trip movie with Hurt as an ex con hitching a ride with two teens. More of a thoughtful movie, rather than action.

Thanks for the recommendation, Dawn. I added it to my queue.

If anyone wants to watch a real tearjerker, I recommend Ponette. French with English subtitles.

Ponette looks good; going into the queue. I actually enjoy many of the foreign films that I end up watching. The French and Italian movies can be very entertaining.

Since it is close to Halloween, a good old-fashioned thriller is The Orphanage. It a spanish language movie with subtitles. Guillermo del Toro(Pan's Labyrinth) directs it.

Another engrossing film is Sin Nombre. Helps us understand how difficult life can be in Latin America and Mexico. I was thinking about this one for a few days after I saw it.

Yes, recommendations are very helpful. I just watched, or rather endured 1/2 of a movie last night, that I wouldn't recommend: Your Highnesswith Natalie Portman, James Franco, and various others. It ended up being too strange, even for me. Sort of a Princess Bride wannabe, with raunchy bits.

Do you know you can go to www.redbox.com, see the inventory in all the machines in your area, and reserve online? Then all you have to do is swipe your card and get your movie in a few seconds. Sure beats trying to find something to rent while standing in a queue!

I think you can even do it from a smartphone.

Yes, this works well, and it does work from a smartphone. The only downside is that if you have a free rental code you can't use that with an online reservation. No biggie, it's just a dollar.

The Help

We just came back from seeing The Help in our favorite theatre - a 1940s vintage family owned $3 theatre.

It was an amazing movie. I had no idea it was going to be so good. If you haven't seen it yet and still have a chance, go.
