Got a conference in Monterey coming up in couple of weeks and I will be taking some clients out for dinner one of the night.

It's been awhile since I've eaten in Monterey, and I was looking for recommendations for a good restaurant, either downtown or Cannery Row area.

Monterey is generally known for its seafood, though I prefer the seafood up in your neck of the woods a bit more.

That said, I have not been to Monterey for about 10 years, but I hear that the Turtle Bay restaurant, which has Mexican style dishes using fresh seafood, is well liked.

Also, Sea Harvest (which is both a seafood market and a restaurant) gets consistent rave reviews.

We like the Fish House on Del Monte, great fresh seafood but often is crowded & noisy. Cafe Fina on the wharf is surprisingly good and has lots of good seafood dishes for such a touristy location. Fandangos in Pacific Grove is always pretty good, and has wonderful sauteed sanddabs.

My wife used to have to travel for work to Monterey. She ate at the Sardine Factory she said it was neat www.sardinefactory.com. I have been up there with her previously and we at a place in Carmel called Casanova's a very reasonable and very good Italian restaurant that were not too far away. www.casanovarestaurant.com

In fact both were featured on Rachael Ray's show.

We have also eaten at the Chart House which was good. And I had lunch a the Seaside Fishwife/Turtle Bay Taquiera which was good. (Casual not for most clients)
http://www.fishwife.com/ There is one restaurant in Seaside and the other in Pacific Grove.

Tx for the recommendations, keep them coming. As I mentioned in my original post, though, I'm looking for recommendations downtown and Cannery Row. That's for logistic reasons.

The BEST clam Chowder (they offer free samples outside) and some of the best seafood, not to mention great drinks at great prices is www.fishhopper.com located next to Bubba Gumps (avoid this place) near the Aquarium.

Monterey Restaurants

If you are looking for high end places within walking distance, I would add The Duck Club Grill at Monterey Plaza Hotel. Great view of the Marina and less Romantic than Chart House. http://www.woodsidehotels.com/monterey/hotel-dining.html

The only restaurant on the Old Fisherman's Wharf on Monterey Harbor I would recommend for a business group is Domenico's On The Wharf www.domenicosmonterey.com .

Of course, Sardine Factory is still #1 even with no view. If you are on a budget, check out the specials at this great restaurant with great atmosphere and wine selection.

Enjoy

I second the Duck Club Grill and Domenico's (although the last time we were there, we were a bit disappointed). The Sardine Factory is extraordinary (love the abalone chowder) but very pricey.

Restaurants on Cannery Row

Had dinner at the Chart House on Cannery row about 8 or 9 months ago and it was wonderful. Also there is a restaurant in about the middle of Cannery Row on the bottom floor of a hotel that was also very good.

Steve, We are here now.

So far, we've had great meals at:

Cafe Rustica in Carmel Valley
Rio Grille in Carmel
Fishwife in Pacific Grove -
Passionfish in Pacific Grove (?) - excellent sablefish, perfect filet
Smokehouse Willie's near the Aquarium in Monterey (great pulled pork & ribs)

Tommorow DH and I have a kids free dinner planned at L'Auberge Carmel; have heard rave reviews -will let you know.

I think most of them have menus available on-line. Happy dining!

Oops, just re-read your orig. post. Sorry can't help you w/ downtown Monterey (except for smokehouse willies - which was casual but very tasty for lunch).
