At the Marriott Maui Ocean Club there was a gas grill explosion yesterday. One person was injured. All the grills have been removed. I don't know the extent of the injuries or how long the grills will be out of service.

Oh my goodness, that's terrible. I'm so sorry for the person and hope that they are okay. Thank you for the news.

Best,

Greg

Not that it matters much in the overall scheme of things, but are those grills propane or natural gas?

It's somehow more awful to suffer accidents/injuries/illnesses when you're on vacation, although logic says that of course it can happen anywhere. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the MOC guest.

I was grilling while at Sheraton Broadway Plantation last week, and mentioned to my brother that Marriott has been the only system I've stayed at that has gas grills. I was wondering why others didn't have them.

The grills used to be propane but they switched to natural gas about 5 years ago

We were there yesterday. The grills are still there but gas has been shut off. You can take your food to the Beachwalk where they have a large propane bar b q outside and they will cook your food. The message on our phone said the grills were off for "preventative maintenance."

The doors in front on the grill base have been removed. I'm not sure what was behind the doors, however, I see a gas hose still running up to the burners.

I am an owner at Barony Beach Club on Hilton Head Island. They have beautiful grilling facilities but you have to know what you are doing when you are using a gas grill. A few summers ago I thought my husband was taking too long to take the food down to the grill so I went stomping down there to do it myself (he's the griller, I had never done it before but I figured how hard could it be?). My teenage daughter came to help. Well, we had trouble lighting the grill. I very foolishly wasn't paying attention, the lid was closed and the gas was on. Well, it finally lit......to the tune of a small boom. We looked at each other wide eyed and I asked my daughter if I still had eyebrows. Cue horrible embarrassment over my ignorance. After that, the actually grilling part went fine and I think, barring the rough start, I did pretty good. So, needless to say, I can fully appreciate the dangers of gas grills and consider myself so lucky as it could have been much much worse. My prayers for a speedy and full recovery are with the injured in Hawaii. I hope they didn't do what I did. I think the grilling stations at the properties are such an awesome place to gather and socialize so I hope they don't have to do away with them.

I had similar situatuation. Closed lid, tried lighting, but had a friend chatting with me so it took longer for me to get it going. Open the lid and it flared up with ball of flame and burned some of my hair and eyelashes. Thankfully nothing more. I've since learned the importance of starting grill with lid open. I hope the injured person has a speedy and full recovery too.

I, too, hope the injured vacationer makes a full recovery. I hope this doesn't cause Marriott to remove the grills. They seem to have a good safety record up until now. It is usually operator-error. I singed my hair and eyelashes last year on a charcoal grill.

People really try to light a gas grill with the lid closed? And people blame the lawyers?

My uneducated guess is starter fluid.

My point exactly. That this unfortunate event had less to do with a charcoal grill, and more to do with a combustible fluid.

Recalling moments of my own mis-spent youth: "Here, hold my beer while I jump-start the campfire with this lighter fluid."

!!!WHUMP!!!

Aw heck, that arm hair will grow back in no time, and what good are eyebrows anyways.

I was grilling for a fund raiser at the office. I sprayed the lighter fluid in the charcoal and then covered the grill for some reason. When I opened it, the air hit the coals and boom! I won't do that again. I was very lucky.

Yes! You were very lucky and I am praying for the injured party in the hospital.

Unfortunately in our litigious society this event has lawsuit written all over it...whether or not it was user error. Hope there is a healthy outcome for the person.

I'm sorry for the injured party but annoyed that someone's inexperience, carelessness, or inebriation may ruin it for the rest of us. The MOC grills are standard issue, wonderfully maintained (cleaned and inspected daily by staff - at least when I've been there) and not a hazard if you use them properly!
(Sure, there may have been a gas leak etc. but given the level of maintenance the odds are high that this was user error)

The grills were up and running at 4 pm last night. The doors below the grills were taken off to allow for better air circulation and not allow gas build up in the enclosed area. No word on the injured guest. No employee would discuss the cause of the mishap.
