Hello all,

We plan on traveling to Mexico this December, 6 of the 7 of us are vaccinated, one is 10 yrs old - so nothing available yet.
Does anyone know of, or suggest travel insurance? one that specifically would cover costs related to COVID - Medical, extended stay, transport in Mexico, transport back to USA?

We are just checking to see if any one has ever purchased travel insurance (outside of COVID, or during) and also if they have ever had to use it (ease of use, language barriers, saving receipts?)

Any other suggestions? Unless things get much worse we will be traveling, also we will be in PV staying at Vidanta, so most of our time will be at the resort, but we do plan on doing some of the Vallarta Adventure tours (smaller ones hopefully) so we will mix with folks on occasion, but the kids will be in the water most of the time.

There is a 'sticky' at the top of the Travel forum about travel insurance. We don't travel without it and have had claims, but not Covid related. My understanding is that most (all?) carriers have either eliminated Covid coverage or have expensive riders. We usually buy through Squaremouth dot com. There is a comparison tool on their site. A catch is that you MUST provide a negative test to board a flight to the US. There are work-arounds to do a land crossing, but it wouldn't be easy if sick.

I see you own with Wyndham. I'm not very familiar with them. Do they offer any type of travel insurance? Other systems I own with do (Vacation Village, UVC) at a discount which includes hospital coverage and repatriation.

We usually purchase our trip insurance from the Alaska Airlines site when we purchase our flights. Alaska Airlines uses Allianz and there is some Covid related insurance provided. I spoke with a rep and was told that if either of us tested positive and needed medical attention it is covered up to our policy limits. I asked what these limits are and now will be looking at a Medjet policy that covers flights back to the USA if we get really sick with covid.

Our concern is we know a moderately healthy vaccinated 66 year old person that recently caught covid in Mexico that passed away quickly. There was no help as the hospitals are overflowing with covid patients.

A person I know suggests that if a person tests positive, and is sick, to head for a land crossing in a rental car and meet someone in Mexico, to take that person to a hospital in the USA.

You can go to insuremytrip.com and select COVID covered plans or whatever the checkbox is. Most of them will still provide medical coverage if you test positive and are under doctor quarantine orders. What they typically won't cover is if you're under a preventive quarantine (ie: someone in your party tested positive, so now you all have to stay for X days).

But you'll just have to read the fine print. Stay away from Travelex/Berkshire Hathaway as they have an exclusion for "government regulations", so if suddenly the US/Mexico says you can't travel, tough luck.

One other item of interest might be how the Allianz policy covers quarantine. The policy provides each covered person up to $250 a day for 5 days up to $1200. I said $250 x 5 days is $1250. They said yes it is but the limit is $1200 and up to $250 a day.
