My husband was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and has had 2 hospitalizations in the last month. We are reserved for 3 weeks in PV in January and having serious misgivings about going . Our doctor also has recommended staying in the US . Has anyone had similar experience with medical care or any recommendation? Thanks so much for your help. We hate to mis out annual visiti to PV, but not worth risking a life.

If I had a husband who was recently diagnosed AND had been hospitalized recently AND whose doctor had advised against it, I wouldn't be going.

Vacation wouldn't be that important to me. I'd want to have my husband near home until he is more stable, and until the doctor changes his mind.

That's my opinion. But I no longer have a husband :bawl:

BTW, I've heard about Pam for years. If you do decide to go, email/talk to her first.

Medical Context - listen to the doctor

Last year my wife forgot an important medication on our kitchen table while packing.
The Mayan Palace had a doctor service with daily hours on resort - and we were able to get a prescription written ( fee 600 pesos I think ) and filled at a pharmacy right near the Starbucks and entrance to the Marina area
I'm sure other resorts have similar staffing or access to a doctor .

If I ever get ill in PV I have faith in being able to get, good medical care .

However - your husband's situation is in a different league , particularly since it appears not to be stabilized at this time since he has 2 recent hospital visits .

Then there is the " who pays " issues - since he is travelling out of country with a pre-existing medical situation . You need to review that for future travel as well .

one day at a time .
and take a few deep breaths so you stay healthy as well.

Health care in PV.

Diane,
I am so sorry to hear of your husband's heart failure. I agree it might be dangerous to travel out of the country right now. Perhaps your reservations can be postponed. I have heard that the hospital near marina is very good but it would be very stressful if you had to deal with a medical issue there.
I do hope you both stay strong during Wisconsin winter. So far it has been mild in Ohio. We would have been at Club Regina with you again this year.
Take care of each other. Donna and Tim (the artist)

My experience with a kidney stone last year in PV showed me exactly how little a person can do in PV as far as medical care is concerned. Unless you speak decent Spanish and know where to go, your basically helpless. Even with trip insurance.

So if you do go you should have a way to get to the hospital quickly. You should have a facility in mind. You should have trip insurance in case of death to repatriate the body or to pay medical expenses to fly to the states for a procedure.

I think you are taking a big risk and I would be one of the people that would not recommend this trip with this type of health problem unless your doctor says the condition is stable enough to travel.

Last year we saw a guy right after a heart attack on the Malecon. The guy was dead with a blue tarp over most of his body. His legs stuck out and his wife kept peeking under the tarp in shock while his adult kids paced. The police put up a yellow tape to divert foot traffic. Not a good way to go, imo.

A few years ago, we have a friend who got sick while in PV and she got excellent treatment at the AmeriMed hospital. She is a retired nurse and she raved about the treatment. However, going to PV with a known serious problem is a whole other issue. I wouldn't do it.

The AmeriMed Hospital near the Marina is supposed to be the best. We were told that by the staff at Victor's and the surrounding merchants when a friend became very ill last year. AmeriMed provided excellent medical care for my friend. It is next door to the new Holiday Inn Express.

Like others, I would change my plans and pass on the 3 weeks in PV at this time. PV is our favorite place to visit, but there is truly no place like home when you are ill.
