I read that the pool was being renovated in December? Anyone know what the options are?I called the resort and the person I spoke with made it sound like everything was closed, and the hotel pool is likewise being renovated. But now I read that there are several pools at both places. Anyone more familiar with the property and the details? I know december is usually not swimming weather, but if there is a nice day or two can be conducive to relaxing poolside and taking a dip and/or enjoying the hot tub, and I'd lie to get a sense of what will be open and available. Do timeshare guests have access to the JW pool facilities and/or other facilities there?

Trying to plan a getaway for next month and, as you can surmise, am kinda confused as to what to do. We'd like something warmish, but I'd also like an area for sightseeing and activities rather than just beach. December seems like an off month for most places (unless you're golfers, which we are not). We've never been to the Southwest and I thought the Phoenix area would be nice; I have heard it is beautiful.

Any and all recommendations would be gratefully appreciated!

The JW Marriott pool is available to MCV guests. this is a very fancy pool with a lazy river.

I went in December a few years ago and the weather was bad. Temps in the 50's a few days and three days rain. I think it was unusual because Phoenix advertises 300 days of sunshine. I am pretty sure that December is not pool weather, better ask about the hot tubs.

When I called last month, they contacted the JW and advised me that the pool at the JW would be closed for renovation at the same time the pool at MCV would be closed.

Thanks everyone. Actually, I tired calling the JW and was told the Lazy River is open and it was resurfaced last year, so we decided to go. The hot tubs are open too :) Hopefully, the weather will be good and it sounds like a nice area to explore, even if not conducive to warmer weather activities.

Any recommendations for room requests at Canyon Villas?

Recommendations for site and/or restaurants?

As others have noted, it can vary. Sunsets and rugged scenery are impressive when it is sunny (which is 300+ days per year, though less so during December).

Any recommendations for room requests at Canyon Villas?

We probably preferred 3rd floor near the center of the resort (either bldgs 2700 or 2800), as they overlook the pool area. The buildings farther away are a bit quieter and slower if that matters to you. If you happen to have a little one with you, maybe consider staying near Lizard Lagoon (a wading pool with splash area), bldgs 3200 or 3300.

For informal dining, most fall under the category of "not bad / pretty good". We happen to like Italian, and found that Spinato's or Marcello's in Tempe, or Vito's in Mesa are all excellent. None of these are very near MCV, though nothing nearby the resort really impressed us as much as these places did.

Roys at the JW Marriott is great. If you like good steaks or seafood there are two Mastro's restaurants (Steahouse and Ocean club) in town. Pricey but very good. Food is a la carte with sides and desserts being large enough for 2 to share.

I second Roy's at the JW. For a casual steakhouse try the Keg Steakhouse in the Desert Ridge shopping complex. This is a chain we have in Canada and its a fave of ours here. For something a bit upscale cant go wrong with any of the restaurants at Kierland commons about 15 to 20 minutes away - including Tommy Bahamas

The Roys at the JW has great happy hour specials. If the weather is good, sit outside around a fire pit or next to a fireplace. ...

Thanks! With everything going on here it has been a bit crazy so I have not had a chance to even sit down and make plans. Anyone who would like to offer a must see/do list for the area for someone who has never been there would be very much appreciated!! I was hoping that Tuggers could help me plan this relatively last minute getaway.
