With all the hoopla about weeks getting cancelled I think I also have a reason to worry but maybe not. What is the difference between the Grand and the Plain Mayan Palace . I have a 2br reserved for May 2007. Did I read somewhere that we didn't have access to the water park? I don't think I will be disappointed but really want to know the differences. It seems like most of the cancellations are of the Grand. shaggy

Are you asking about the Grand Mayan/Mayan Palace Riviera Maya RCI #6483 or 6973? If so, that's where we're headed this April. If not, just ignore the rest of my post :D

These are basically the same property. My understanding is that the GM units are a little larger, with more upscale furnishings and perhaps a better location. At this property there is only one (huge) pool that is used by both GM & MP guests.

From what I've read RCI is moving some people who have GM confirmations into MP units. Personally, this would not bother me and I'm booked into an MP unit anyway so hopefully won't have any problem.

However, I think at some other GM/MP locations the guests are more segregated and the GM has nicer grounds, pools and such that "regular" MP guests are not allowed to use. This seems to be where most of the complaints are coming from, and I can't say I blame the exchangers in this case either.

If you are booked into the Riviera Maya property I'm sure you'll enjoy either one too, and shouldn't worry. I've not heard about a water park there, but I admit I don't have the most uptodate knowledge of the resort!

Deb, I heard they were building a waterpark there and I know Kelli is looking forward to using it. We are talking about the same one. I know we will have fun there anyway. I would be thoroughly po'd if they would charge us extra to use it. shaggy

Shaggy, I also have a 2BR reserved at the Mayan Palace Riviera for April 2007, just a month before yours. Will let you know how it goes...

Charge

In Acapulco, there is a charge to use the waterpark if you are staying in a Mayan Palace unit. Even for owners of Mayan Palace. :(

Shaggy,
Get ready to be PO'D :D The water park is not ready yet. Maybe by May of 2007. Even then I believe if you are not an owner of Mayan Palace you will be charged to use it.
The property you asked about on Riveria Maya is a great resort. Both mayan and grand exchangers use some amenities.
I am one of the Grand exchangers that got cancelled. This is how RCI explained it to me the Grand deposited 150 units they did not have to bulk bank. So everyone that got those exchanges got cancelled. Or I should say switched to the mayan. Same size unit and same dates. The Grand units are nicer, but not worth getting to upset about. RCI did make it right with me and was more then fair. The rep told me this involved units up until May 2006. So I don't think I would fuss to much much about next years bulk banking.
I will be explaining this again on my post further down the page sorry for the repeat.

Shaggy, maybe they will have the waterpark complete before your 2007 visit. I won't even mention it to my DD since it definitely won't be open for our trip this April. But she is looking forward to the "largest swimming pool in Latin America" as it was billed by the RCI guy :)

Kelli saw the pool and she is ready. Says I probably won't get her to leave. Looking forward to it!! My co-workers think I'm nuts to book so far in advance. I quit trying to explain the sickness. shaggy

Shaggy we just returned from 1 week at the MP and 1 at the GM. The main difference is the GM units are a little larger and they have a large terrace with a small pool. Also 4 burners instead of 2 and a larger fridge. The pool on the terrace was cold and the weather wasn't warm enough when we were there to use it. In fact it was so cool 2 days that I used the large tub in the room to warm up! They say it is a jaccuzzi but it is just an oversize bath tub, no jets. Also you do have at least a partial ocean view from all the GM units. They were working very hard on the waterpark and new pool area which is supposed to be for GM only so I would think it would be ready by the time you go. I hope they heat it because the other pool is so cold hardly anybody used it. I only got in once on the only really hot day we had. As owners this was our first time at this location and is is our least favorite MP resort. Don't get me wrong it is a beautiful place but too large and spread out for my liking. The first week we were so far from the pool we had to take the shuttle. We asked to be moved closer but the only unit they had by the pool was on the main floor close to all the construction. At least the second week we were able to walk to the pool from our GM unit. We much prefer the Mayan Resorts in Acapulco or NV. I know you will have a good time and you will enjoy Playa del Carmen! Hope that waterpark is ready for you!

Lynn :p

I am hoping the waterpark is not just for GM people only. Kelli will be disappointed if she can't use it. I bet I can talk someone into letting us go to the waterpark. Sorry it was so cold while you were there. I'm really surprised it was so dang cold. I went to St Martin / Tradewinds for my birthday in Feb once and it was glorius. What did you like best? Tours? They've got a little over a year a year to get the waterpark finished. Shaggy

Anyone can go (if it's like Acapulco), but you have to pay if you are staying anywhere else but the Grand.

$8-10 Usd?

I could be way off base, but at Christmas I think it was $8-$10 USD/person/day in Acapulco. But adults could watch their kids from louge chairs just for that area. Also, the resort has personnel that monitor it from a little bridge so they can see the whole waterpark.
