Update from Westin villas - main road to airport is currently closed, so if going to airport or driving to kaanapali, it’s going all the way around driving north - so 100 minutes. Shuttle service suspended, activity center closed, and tidy service to be rescheduled for another day.

The main road is closed but that--mostly dirt-- road is open?

Supposedly the dirt road is open, if it’s raining at all then you might not get thru as I recall you weren’t supposed to drive that way unless you had 4WD.

But, text update from Westin:

Aloha Valued Owners and Guests,

Here is another update:

Westin Shuttle Services will now be operating today; however, service is currently limited, and significant delays should be expected until further notice.
Pool deck services are suspended; however, Auntie's Kitchen is running normal operations at this time.

Mahalo,

The Westin Ka'anapali Team

Road is now open TO airport, but not yet FROM.

Fully open now.

The road around the north side is not dirt as I recall, it's asphalt but in very poor condition the last time I did it. I would not take that route in a zillion years right after significant rain. I would not want to drive it while wet/muddy/slippery in any way. There are portions that you hug the cliff (with no guardrail) and God forbid you meet any oncoming traffic and one of you has to back up for an extended distance, parts of the road aren't wide enough for two cars.

I wouldn't recommend that road to anyone. I wouldn't drive it again myself, once was "entertaining" but I don't need that entertainment again.

I don't think you could get from Ka'anapali to the airport in 100 minutes going that way. I'd budget at least three hours. And DEFINITELY not at night or in poor visibility, you probably wouldn't survive.

It is one thing to drive that north road once in a while during daytime with little traffic on it, and quite another if there is a lot of traffic trying to get to Kahului because the other direction is closed. Some of the locals there aren't very friendly either, especially if their roads are blocked by lots of tourists.

Yup. Once in a while in nice weather is what we do. Usually from West Maui to the banana bread stand is about it for us.
