Needing to rent a car for 29 days. ACE is quoting $612 (decent size car too - economy suv) with others mostly between $900-$1,250. Seems too good to be true and usually it’s not true. Anyone with experience with “Ace” on Maui? I called them, person seemed friendly and they are open near airport. Just not sure what the catch is ?

$190 for monthly rate
$422 taxes and fees (wow)

For me , I don't want to be stuck in Maui with a broken car so I use Avis and the likes. I have tried local guys before and had very bad luck a couple of times. I have also had very good luck a couple of times. My point is there is no luck factor when using a newer product like the cars at Avis.

I've never heard of Ace. They do seem to have pretty good reviews though.

My bil used a "Rent a Wreck" type car rental service on Maui one year, years ago. Whenever we took that car to go anywhere he'd have to go down early to get it started. Then one time when he went to adjust the rear view mirror, it came off in his hands. We would call him "Anything to save a buck Howard".

I've seen Ace at many airports, so it is not just a local company. Never have used them though. I'd check out Yelp and Google reviews for that location, to see if there are consistent issues with them.

My lookup of reviews on https://www.consumeraffairs.com/travel/ace-rent-a-car.html are all 100%BAD (1 star out of 5). I knew it was probably too good to be true so had to ask my tugger friends. Thought about flyertalk, but more comfortable here at TUG. Will probably(?) not chance it with ACE

I rented from them once, but not again. They gave us a car larger than I wanted, which guzzled gas and was harder to park. It came with a key, but no key FOB, which makes it hard to find in the dark. I've never had a problem with Alamo, and that's all we rent in Hawaii now.

We’ve been fortunate with any of the major brand car rentals (hertz, Avis, Alamo, etc). i definitely try to save money when I can, but Prudently & wisely. I don’t like regretting my decisions. Now, our recent Lyft driver suggested “Turo” app for renting cars. Will be doing some research on this.

Haven't used Ace but FWIW we used Alamo last summer on Maui and our battery was dead when we checked out. Alamo wanted to charge us several hundred dollars to come out to Westin Kaanapali from the airport lot and give us a jumpstart. Fortunately we have AAA so we called them. Took a few hours to wait but not sure Alamo would have been faster. Cost = zero (+ tipped the AAA driver)

Bottom line: Big name rentals also break down and may not cover you when it happens. Make sure you have AAA or some other service.
