Will be in New Orleans for a few days next month--any recommendations between the New Orleans Marriott and the JW Marriott in New Orleans? It seems most feel the JW isn't up to the typical JW standards, and I have a handful of suite upgrade awards I want to use and it seems there are many more suites at the New Orleans Marriott. Any advice/comments/suggestions appreciated!

I would suggest a few other options besides the ones you mention. The Courtyard Iberville is in the same building as the Saint and the Ritz Carlton. You get access to the fitness center and spa that is part of the Ritz. You are a three minute walk to Bourbon Street. The entrance is on Iberville up from the Acme Oyster House. They have 1BR suites and you will get an upgrade with no problem. I also really liked the vibe at the Q&C HotelBar. It is two buildings, and the restored Queen and Crescent (railroad) headquarters is fun. No suites though. The Residence Inn up the block is really good. The one closest to Canal is the one to pick. I would stay away from the Marriott, Sheraton, Westin and W. There are much better choices like the ones I mentioned.

Between the two, I'd pick the JW.......it's beautiful, and always seems to be a notch above.
Whenever we've stayed at a JW, and we have at least 4 times in major cities like San Francisco, Washington DC, Orlando, & Atlanta,
we've loved them.

For a better deal, you might also consider these:
We stayed once in New Orleans at the Renaissance Pere Marquette 8-10 years ago and loved it, especially the concierge lounge,
so good we had lunch there every day.
Short walk to Canal St, Bourbon St, Royal St.

There's also the The Saint Hotel/Autograph Collection (fabulous)!
The Saint looks wonderful. If going today, if not the JW Marriott, I'd probably consider that one. We like that brand a lot.

also, the N.O. Westin Hotel/French QTR...lots of good choices.

I've stayed at the JW and looked extensively as the Marriott across the street in addition to the Conference center location. Out last trip we stayed at the Bluegreen resort around the corner from the NO Marriott but originally were booked at the Convention location as this was for an event at the convention center. Personally if the canal street location (they're across the street from each other) were best, I'd chose the JW but not hesitate to stay at the NO Marriott. In the current environment I'd call the hotels and see what's going on with their restaurants and lounges and that would likely sway my choice if one were doing better than the other.

Will you have a car? If so there are some lovely vacation rental homes nearby. Try looking at Evolvevacationrental.com.

We stayed at Marriott. With our elite we got a nice upgrade to concierge level where they have a lounge with a good city view and that took care of bfast and evening snacks (weekends it may be closed). Very central location.
