Finally decided to go to Waiohai Beach Club instead of KoOlina, which we really love. We have never been there and was wondering which option is better using points, Ocean View or Garden.
Read somewhere that some of the Garden villas have a nice, view of resort ponds and floral setting and the ocean view may, not exacting, be a ocean view? Also,
which buildings would anyone recommend. Since this is a new place for us, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx

Some of the GV units do look out on the very nice interior garden; others look out over a parking lot (back side of Hale 4). Some of the OV units actually have a nice ocean view; many do not. The OV units have better views than the GV units taken as a group. We sold our OV Waiohai unit after getting lousy views for years -- and because of the relatively high MF's.

If it were me, I would reserve GV and ask for a unit that looks out into the interior garden -- and is not on the first floor.

Thanks. That's the sense I got after some, not so good, reviews. We are planning to go for 14 days. I assume the resort is relaxing? and there are things to do in surrounding areas? I would not be too happy if we got a parking lot view, though.

There are very few really good ocean views, mostly in buildings 1,2,8, and those go to weeks owners staying multiple consecutive weeks using their deeded ownership. You are very unlikely to get those units on a points booking. I would save the points and book island view. With a points booking, the actual view is likely to be better if you book island view, compared to ocean view.

Any recommendations for buildings for island view.

It's not which building; it's whether or not the unit looks out into the garden in the interior of the development; those are the best GV units.

A little late to the party, but yes, if you are staying at Waiohai using Abound points IV is a much safer bet (and cheaper to boot) than OV. And as others said, it's not the about the Hale but the actual villa. Some of the best and worst IV villa views are in Hale 4.

(PS Services/stores change at Waiohai all the time so I make no representations about anything but Hale position. Thankfully, the Honu Bar was still going strong in 2022)

Hale 4 is a long way from the ocean, about .2 miles. Most of the villas are ocean view. A lot of the island view villas are overlooking the back parking lot. Building 2 is a good location overlooking the interior and the quiet swimming pool.

This past March we were at Waiohai for a week using points for an IV. This was our 3rd stay. Our request was for a High Floor in Hale 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 or 8 with a preference for an interior Garden/Pool view. We ended up with 3rd Floor in Hale 5 looking outside of the resort. Actually turned out nice as we had the morning sun to enjoy our coffee on the balcony being serenaded by the native birds. It was really quit nice, and quieter than the garden side. The moon rises were also nice and the balcony didn't have the hot afternoon sun.

My advice is, enjoy the facility, the beach and the fact you are are on vacation. Enjoy your 2 weeks and take some day trips and tours.

No matter what you ask for, you'll get what they give you. Again, enjoy!

We stayed also stayed at Waiohai in March of this year and enjoyed an Ocean View villa using points. We requested a high floor with a view of the ocean but also preferred an interior facing villa for a view of the resort gardens and pools. We stayed in Hale 7, third floor, villa 7308. Attached is a photo with a view of the ocean taken from our balcony. This was our first time staying at Waiohai and found it to be a great location to relax and from which to visit other parts of the island. We look forward to returning in the future!

We had OV and IV units in Hale 7 on our last visit. I see no reason to pay more for OV at this resort either on purchase or points from a usage standpoint. Probably the only reasons to worry about the view would be for enrollment purposes due to the higher points per unit.

I have owed at Waiohai for many years- used to own both OV and IV- sold the OV as most overlook the parking lot. Many, many Island view units have OV that will be on an angle similar to pst 11 above but at an angle. You can get these by requesting Hale 4,7 or 8 high floor- I have been successful at getting these units almost every year. That being said I own Waiohai and I own mulitple weeks- and Wahiohai is a resort where they do know and cater to owners- I think may be important for my stays because we own weeks 51 and 52- but we also have floating weeks and have gotten these assignments on summer stays. We have also used II trades into the property and gotten very nice gardent view units- much, much better than OV units even as an owner in my opinion. There are a very small number of IV units in Hale 4 that overlook the parking lot this is minimal compared to the number of OV units that overlook the very busy public parking lot.

If you are booking on points I think you are unlikely to be assigned the IV parking lot views so I would definitely book IV over OV and this is from someone who used to own OV and exchanged it for the IV.

Enjoy your time at the resort.

Trading in to OV any recommendations as to what buildings to request and hope for the best for to avoid a parking lot view? I know some resorts requesting a pool view at least mitigates the chances of an awful asking lot/OV. Any recs would be appreciated- and, I know, in a trade it's a crapshoot, but never hurts to ask.

Thanks, for everyone’s comments. We ended up booking Island View for 14 nights and out a request for interior view. We’ll see how that goes.

I traded our MOC for a week there back in 2012. We got the back view of the rear of the parking lot. I've stayed at a ton of Marriotts and others and this was, by far, the worst view I ever had. The resort is nice. Kind of long and narrow line of buildings going back from the ocean. I generally liked the interior area a lot with pools, hot tubs, grills, etc. The bar is (or was) right at the edge of the property by the beach. Beach was great. Kauai is kind of rural, generally which many like. There is a WalMart in town, but the closest store is (or was) kind of a country grocery store. I still show people the picture I took in that store of almost an entire aisle with more Spam flavors than I've seen anywhere esle. Lots to see, lots of active stuff to do. We did a kayak trip which was fun. Not necessary to be a fitness guru for that. I think if you wanted to see a more natural Hawaii, this is the place. I normally don't even care about the view, even though I get up like 2 hours earlier than anyone else and sit on the patio. View stunk but I stilll rate the place and even my experience there very high.

Anyone have the email address for contacting the resort to put in requests? It never hurts ...

We just checked in. Room 5102 (Hale 5, way in the back.). Beautiful room, very private and tropical lanai. Absolutely gorgeous!

Island view, ground floor. Very private, tropical view off the lanai. Basically a fence covered with beautiful plants and vegetation. Quiet, nice. We have been up near the main pool and Honu Bar before, this is our first time in the back. But it is a short walk to the main pool, and much more quiet where we are now. Love it.
