TUGgers-

My son will be getting married next summer, and I'd like to give him and my daughter-in-law an Hawaii vacation. We have over 1M points. It is possible to redeem points for a travel package that includes 7 nights in Kauai and 70K miles for use on United Airlines out of PHL. Rooms are available for Marriott Rewards for the week we need, AND United has tickets for mileage available on those dates.

My question is . . . How does one go about "gifting" such a trip? Is it possible to use mileage for someone else in United's program? Will Marriott allow the reservation in my son's name for my points?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ron

2 of my 3 daughters have honeymooned on my points in Hawaii. You just book the room in their name and make sure you can marry up the FF flights at the same time as the hotel availability. You have to do the booking but in their names using your points. Quite simple. But don't wait too long as NOW is the time to get them before they run out of points travel for next summer.

The points go into your accounts and you just use the miles as you need them .. you don't have to give them extra FF miles for another trip unless you want to. Business class would be even nicer for a long trip at a special time in life and really enhance the 'value' of using points compared to cash. Two Cat 7 pkgs would set you back 540,000 MR points and give you 240,000 FF miles ... enough left over for YOU to go too and have a separate room! :)

Have fun ... they are terrific gifts.

I used points for my sons honeymoon in Phuket this past June. 235,000 points got be a travel package for a category 1-5 hotel & 120,000 miles with United.

I booked the flights with United (round-trip 60,000 each) and reserved 7 nights at the JW Phuket and exchanged into another 7 nights at the Phuket Beach Club. I ended up getting another exchange so I've still got the category 1-5 cert.

You have to book it through your MR account, but it is no problem to put the reservation in your son's name. Also, the miles must go into an airline account with your name, but the tickets can be issed for your son & his bride.

Call Marriott rewards and they'll talk you through it. They were very helpful as I planned this honeymoon trip! Kauai should be a great honeymoon!
