This last May, we spent a week at the Marriott Aruba Surf Club (MSU), in a 2-BDRM. We are now into our second week at the Marriott Maui Ocean Club (MOC), Lanai tower, also in a 2-BDRM.

The units are very similar, both with full kitchens and W/D. MOC is a little bigger overall: kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom, bathroom, and lanai, but both very comfortable. The grounds at MOC are also larger, with more towers, more pools, a longer beach, nicer water, but no lazy river.

When rating Maui to Aruba, along with MOC vs MSU, Maui wins hands down. :D

1. More things to do.
2. Larger island
3. Better weather
4. Feels like home
5. Better beaches
6. Better diving, both SCUBA & snorkel
7. Better resources for food, including Costco & Foodland
8. Rental cars are cheaper and less hassles
9. No problems with debit cards in Hawaii

I luv Hawaii. :D

I know there are people who LOVE Aruba -- and possibly most of them live on the East Coast. I had an opportunity to spend two weeks in Aruba this year. One week included one of my favorite people -- lovely 21 year old grand-daughter. Even so, one trip there was enough for me.

The way I described it to friends -- when I drive around the islands in Hawaii it is difficult to focus on the road because there is so much beautiful scenery that I've never seen anywhere else. When I drove from North to South in Aruba -- I might as well have been driving in the Mojave Desert.

After at least ten trips to Hawaii, I have now visited St. Thomas, Grand Cayman and Aruba. I do like the warm water, but not enough to return.

I was in both Aruba and Maui this year and live in NYC. The ease of Aruba and the fact that it's not that much different makes Aruba a much better vacation for me. I love Hawaii but on the East Coast its just not feasible year in and year out.

Aruba grocery stores have basically everything you want by the way.

If I lived on the West coast I might prefer Hawaii because it is beautiful, but I'm with you. And while I agree with a few things in the OP's post, I actually think the weather in Aruba is better- it is more consistent, less rain, and in the summer the trade winds make it much more comfortable. I can find whatever I want in the markets, and the prices are certainly no higher than in Hawaii. While admittedly the snorkeling is better in Hawaii, there are great places to snorkel in Aruba as well, and the blue Caribbean water is nothing to scoff at. Surfers love Hawaii, but Aruba is the destination for kite surfing, and both have ample water sports. Lots of great restaurants to choose from in Aruba as well, with several on the beach restaurants which are uncommon elsewhere. We've never had a problem with renting a car, and always use credit cards (although admittedly have never tried debit cards) without an issue. American dollars are widely accepted as well.

Don't get me wrong- I love the beauty of Hawaii. However, the trip is tough for those on the East coast. Aruba doesn't have the tropical beauty, but it has a lot going for it, and feels like home away from home. It's a great feeling that many of us have about our home resorts, and I think an imp. draw for the MVC overall.

Enjoy your trip!!

While I agree that the overall landscape of Hawaii is stunningly beautiful, that's not enough to make me want to return. I love the Aruba Surf Club, the weather, the restaurants, the beach, the people, and the relatively short plane ride to Aruba!

Is this an East Coast/West Coast thing? Maybe we prefer Maui because of ease of access -- and same for our East Coast brethren who prefer Aruba?

Personally, I love Maui, and can't wait for next trip.

I also love Aruba, and can't wait for next trip.

And then there is St. Thomas, which I love, and can't wait for the next trip.

Greg, I wrote the original post after visiting both Aruba and Maui almost back-to-back this year. It had nothing to do with airfare or being closer to one location than the other. I was only commenting on the comparison between the 2 Marriott properties and also the island.

But, like you, from the comments, I think that it is an East-coast/West-coast thing, highly biased based on airfare and not individual subjectivity on the properties of the Islands themselves. But, that's my opinion and what do I know.

When we were down in Aruba, it seemed like all of the people at the Surf Club that we talked to were from Philly (a lot), NY, or NJ: all East coast.

I'm not trying to start a fight. Back to my vacation, unfortunately, we have to leave on Sunday.

Oh, four more thinks.

1. Seems like about everybody that I've talked to here is a MOC owner and just about every body has points not just weeks. Thought that was interesting.
2. Just got back from the owners social and it was a big bust. It was at the pool bar and it was not conducive to socializing, so nobody did, unfortunately. The hot tub was the best place to socialize.
3. They have a fire pit, like Ko'Olina, but they don't have any chairs around it, unlike Ko'Olina, so that's a bummer. The Surf Club could use a fire pit for evening/night-time fun/socializing.
4. The barbecues have timers on then for the gas. If you don't set the timer, you cant fire-up the barbe. It really confuses everybody, so be fore-warned

We've been to both the past 2 years. The trip from Las Vegas to Aruba is brutal. The smaller island of Aruba tends to limit the amount of time you can spend there. We've spent as much as 8 weeks on Muai without getting bored. In Aruba that would be a problem. For a shorter vacation we prefer the restaurants in Aruba, both the quality and prices. We also prefer the beach at the Surf Club. As far as weather, if there is no trade winds blowing in Maui that weather can be oppressive. We also prefer the weather in Aruba. Finally, the beauty of Hawaii is far superior.

BTW, round trip airfare from Las Vegas to Aruba is about the same as Las Vegas to Maui. The airfare to Hawaii has gone up 50% in the past few years.

While ease of access does play a large part, obviously many people from the Midwest and West coast come to Aruba and from the East coast frequent Hawaii, so it's not just flight times. I think both islands have a lot to offer. Like Greg, I love them both, and if I lived in CA would definitely visit the Hawaii properties more frequently. Personally, I love the lushness and the beauty., truly unparalleled. However, the almost completely consistent weather and the comfort of the trade winds even in high 80's or low 90's, along with warm friendly people, great restaurant choices and ease of access tip the scales for us.

It's funny- before we bought at the SC my family used to quip that they needed a vacation after one of my vacations- always on the go, sightseeing, walking miles a day, etc.. On a cruise we were the first off and the last ones back on; in Europe we walked the entire cities, many times doing 15 plus miles a day. Aruba is the only place I enjoy just vegging, lying on the beach, reading a book, going in the water and repeating....there is something about the air, the water and the environment there that just beckons relaxation. I've learned that sometimes it's nice just to recharge your batteries, so to speak. I guess it's because, for us, it feels like home.

Completely agree. We were in Hawaii for 4 weeks December/Jan of this past year on four different Islands Maui,Kauai,Big Island and Oahu and the weather although pleasant for touring most days (it rained almost every day in Maui) I only went swimming twice the entire time since it only reached 80 twice and was usually low to mid 70's during day. There were actually a couple of nights that my wife wore her winter coat at night in Honolulu.

We love Aruba for the great weather (go swimming every day),fantastic beaches, Casinos, great restaurants and warm friendly people.

Just another east coast/West Coast point of view. This was our fourth trip to Hawaii and my flight from JFK to SF was supposed to have a 3 hour layover which turned into a nine hour layover and I didn't check into timeshare until 2 AM for a nightmare 25 hour trip door to door. It then rained every day in Maui so I caught bronchitis and went to urgent care twice during our trip and could not get rid of coughing for 6 weeks, After two weeks at home went to Aruba for 3 weeks and coughing cleared up and went to beach and swam every day. Aruba weather cured me so it's Aruba for me every January/February from now on.:)

I'm in the Philly area, and Maui is always going to be my go-to spot, despite being ~12 hours away via plane. Got married there, will renew our vows there, and will eventually move there.

Count me in with PuckmanFL and NTP66. I live in FL and Hawaii is my "happy place". I will fly there anytime I can get the time off, scrounge up some $$ and fly away.

I have not been to Aruba, so I cannot comment. And please Aruba lovers, don't take this personally, but I have no interest in visiting there. I've seen pix of lovely beaches, so I have no doubt it is a great vacation spot. Here's the thing, I am truly and secretly happy that lots of folks do NOT prefer Hawaii over other locations. ;) If everyone loved it as much as DH and me, I could never get a rez to go there! It's darned hard enough as it is to secure my weeks at the 13 month window at MMOC! :roll eyes: What I REALLY want Santa to bring me is a fixed week OF to add if the prices would just settle down….

Ron98GT, very interesting that most folks you have talked to during your stay are owners with points. As an owner of 2 OF weeks EOYO and 1 week Island EOYE, I have looked at the points option every which way but for us it just seems outrageously pricey. To the point of ridiculous IMHO. But let me give a qualifier here, we bought at MMOC to stay there and only there. Because I have had DVC for many years I can use my DVC points for other great places I might want to stay. And Ron98GT, now you have me curious and I shall have to do my own unscientific study when we are back on Maui this Spring….

Aesthetically there is no comparison and wouldn't be fair to compare the two as Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Maui is also more than twice the size of Aruba. Aruba is a flat dry Island with some pretty beaches, great weather and very nice people. Coming from the east coast the Caribbean is our go to place for vacations. The flights are relatively short (2 to 4 hours) to most anywhere in the Caribbean. St. John is probably one of the Islands you could try to compare to Hawaii and it still would come up short comparison wise as far as beauty. That said, I'll probably never visit Hawaii as the flight(for us)is way too long. If I'm going to spend that much time in the air flying to that part of the world I'd by pass Hawaii altogether for one of the French Polynesian Islands :D

You lost me on "3. better weather." Not sure how you can improve on 84 F year round weather. One thing I love about the Aruba is the fact it is near equator and has pretty consistent weather in Jan-March when I need to get away. And like others mentioned, I can get there at an affordable price, within 6-7 hours and without the jet lag. I love Hawaii and we chose it for our honeymoon but DH says he won't go back because it's too far and too much jet lag. I'll take my 8 yo when she's older and we'll need to make a stop in California to break up the trip...and it will have to be for two weeks.

And almost never is Aruba hit by a hurricane. It is windy though. Somewhat like the west side of Maui

We did Aruba for spring break last year, we left one day early. No one in the family (two teenage kids) was having fun.

I might try Maui based on this thread

We love both places but for different reasons. I've been to the Hawaiian Islands over 25 times and Aruba somewhere around 15-20. Maui without doubt has it over on Aruba for scenic beauty.
That said in terms of weather my opinion is that Aruba is generally safer in that 99% of the time rain means a passing shower(there are exceptions...big ones...but they are rare)
Both places have great restaurants!
Both places have great beaches!
I am not a surf club fan (it is just my opinion so don't shoot me ;)so perhaps OP if you were to come back to Aruba you might want to consider the OC which I think would get you a better comparison in terms of relaxed feel to Maui.
In terms of your 1-9 though ...
1-Aruba has less to do....we like it that way :)
2-Aruba is smaller but that isn't a negative imho
3 I disagree on the weather completely
4 Both feel like home to us
5 Depends on which beaches you are talking about...if you are comparing Kaanapali with Palm, I'd say that its a tie....
6 We don't dive but we've found ok snorkelling in both places....but nothing in either place that we thought was amazing after some of the other places we've snorkelled
7 Ling's has everything we want in Aruba as do the stores in Maui
8 Ummmmm...our last rental in Aruba was less expensive than in Hawaii
9 don't use debit so cant comment !

I don't own Marriott points and never will, I luv my weeks. I was just commenting about:

1. Of all of the the people that I meet in the hot tub, most of the people not only owned at MOC, but owned multiple weeks, up to 4 weeks OF.
2. Although I have been surprised at how many people own MOC, none of the owners used their points to stay here. The hot tub has been very interesting.

Speaking of the hot tub, the one North of the Lahaina tower where we are staying is 105 degrees. The hot tub between Lanai and Molokia is 100 degrees. And the HT next to Napili has been closed for repairs since checked in on November 29th.

Ron,

I have done a similar experiment, at the grills. It is very very rare to find someone who traded in, almost all are owners at MOC -- often multiple week owners. And it's fun to see the same guys year after year, because either they are fixed week, or like that Week 24 or Week 25 for their float.

The other thing I've found is the owner who also has a second week (or more) that they book concurrently, for family to use. Truly, it's a great way to build capacity and memories.

Best,

Greg

Aesthetically there is no comparison and wouldn't be fair to compare the two ... :D

But I did, since, as I stated in my initial post, we stayed at the Surf Club in May for a week, in a 2-BDRM. And here we are half way thru our second week at MOC, also in a 2-BDRM. Since our stays were almost back-to-back, I thought it would be good, at least to me, to post the differences, be it good or bad, with no consideration to the travel time, or one being lush and the other a desert. If we had stayed in Thailand or Spain (they both have beaches), I still would have posted the differences.

Anyway, I'll being trying to get either St Thomas or SF again in May of 2017. Although I have been leaning toward ST, I've been reading about some SCUBA wreck diving off Aruba. That reminds me of another big problem with Aruba: Rip Currents.

Either way, we're having fun :D

Ron,

You are picking fantastic vacation spots -- I like the way you think.

With respect to Aruba SCUBA diving, I did a wreck dive on the Antilla, a German freighter sunk during WW II (they scuttled the ship when Germany invaded the Netherlands) -- it was a fascinating dive in 50 foot depth.....I think it was a 400 foot ship, and was a terrific dive -- great memory.

However....I understand the diving in STT is also fantastic, although I've not been. Maybe next time. And, of course, Maui has great diving......

Enjoy your trip!

Best,

Greg

I agree and was in shock after I got the Aruba confirmation. All of the flights from LV were red-eyes with a lay-over. We would have gotten in about 24 hours from the time we left LV.

What we did was to fly JetBlue direct to JFK for 4-nites then fly JetBlue direct to Aruba. That worked out great. Coming back, we left Aruba in the late morning with a JetBlue flight to Boston, with a brief lay-over for some Boston seafood at the airport, then flew JetBlue direct to LV, getting in about 9pm.

It was nice getting Customs over with in Aruba. We also didn't have any problems at the airport, since we arrived on a Thursday and left on a Thursday, with no crowds or delays. :D
