I am renting a week (posted on craiglist) for my coming Summer vacation. I want to find out if I must have a certificate with my name written on it for check in.

I was told by the seller (owner of the week) that I will check in as his guest and don't need a certificate. He will add in my name only. Can someone who has knowledge about rental with marriott system please confirm if this is the way it should be.

In the past, I had rented a timeshare week (wydham system) and I got a certificate confirmation with my name written on it and had no problem when check in.

Here are my other questions

1) How can I find out whether the week I am getting is the exchange week or his own week at this resort . I contacted resort and able to confirm he actually has a week reservation here, but they don't say which kind

2) How can I find out the correct parking fee. I was told by owner of the week, self parking is free, but valet aprking cost $5 . The Marriott website shows parking cost $30- $35/day.

3) Is it reasonable and possible to request the seller (owner) to provide me the certificate with my name written on it before the final money exchange took place . I just want to make sure I have no problem at check in when I get there.

Thank you for reading my post

I doubt the renter will put anything in your name before your check clears. If you are concerned, ask him for some kind of rental agreement with which you both are comfortable with the wording.

I offer it to my renters. Some sign it. Others just send me the check. When it clears I call the resort, add their name to the reservation. The resort sends me a confirmation email which I forward to the renter and he sees his name on the reservation.

As long as the week is the owner's week and not an exchange, you do not pay parking, and he can add your name (and provide a copy to you) to the reservation so you do not need a guest certificate. You can also verify with Marriott using the reservation number.

Have a great week at Ko Olina!

The person you are renting from should provide a copy of the week's direct reservation from MARRIOTT (not II). If this is indeed the owner's week (not an exchanged week), then a your name should be added to the reservation when you pay-up, and they should provide a copy of that for you.

If this is an exchanged week from II, then you should not be renting it as this against II rules and your week could posssibly get cancelled.

Last year when I rented out my Aruba Ocean Club week 52, the renter wanted proof that I had the week confirmed. I sent her a copy of my confirmation letter with my rewards number blacked out. As soon as her check cleared I had Marriott add her name to the confirmation. I then sent her a copy of it.

I have no problem putting the renter's name on the reservation and emailing it to them BEFORE I get paid because it does put the renter at ease and if something happens I can always change it at no cost whenever I want.

I am a little confuse between an exchange week from II (mentioned in the quote) vs the one I received.

I received a copy from owner. It shows the week is from Interval international. Does the same rule ( II against renting an exchange week) apply for both.

I always prefer to pay with CC but owner wants the payment in cashier check . What do you think of it. Should I go ahead to pay with cashier check or should I pay with CC. I am not sure if I have any protection with cashier check payment

By the way, can some one please clarify the full name of the II ( mentioned in the quote) . I don't understand what it mean . What is the name II would show in the certificate

Appears the person is renting out a week obtained through an Interval exchange. I would walk away.

II stands for interval International. As posted above, renting an exchanged week is against II's rules. Usually, all goes well. HOWEVER, II can cancel the exchange, and you could fins yourself with no place to stay.

I would only rent an owner's week, reserved directly through Marriott.

If you rent an exchange week from II (even if they also own at that property) there is a chance you might arrive at Ko'Olina and find your confirmation has been cancelled by II. What would you do then? You fly all the way to Oahu and find you don't have a reservation. It happened to a friend of mine. They eventually got it all straightened out, but for a few hours it looked like a nightmare vacation!

It's too risky for me.
