I booked a getaway through Interval for Park City Utah and now it looks like I won't be able to make it due to needing to travel for business. I declined the insurance at the time as I was confident I was going to be able to make it, plus the insurance was not much of a lower price than the getaway itself. I have asked some family and friends to see if they were interested, but most already have vacations scheduled for spring break and the summer months. I know it is against Interval's policy to rent the week out, which I fully respect, I am just wondering if I have any other options. Any suggestions are appreciated, and if nothing can be done, I suppose I will just have to write the week off.

Post it in the distressed thread and read the posting instructions first.

Check with your employer. When this happened to me a few years back, they had no problem compensating me for my vacation since I was cancelling because of work. They paid for my vacation so I could go another time.

Another thought is to see if a local charity or church might want the week.

You get a write-off at least.

No, you don't get a write-off for a week - only if you donate an entire ts ownership.

I'm in the same boat with a January 2014 week at Westin Princeville resort. I don't really want to pay for another exchange (I'm already out ~$150 for the exchange fee), but I hate for it to go unused. Unfortunately, none of my friends/family want it.

I'm wondering if we could list it with the sole intention of recouping just the fees we paid....or would that be a "commercial" enterprise?

If you are just recouping, you will likely encounter no issues.

That's not correct.

II doesn't allow you to rent an exchange for any compensation, even if you are just asking for your MF's and exchange fee. If you advertise in a public place you might get caught. II will freeze your account and cancel your deposits with them. It has happened to TUGgers, who have posted about their experience. One person purchased a bunch of getaways and was trying to rent them. II caught him and cancelled all the confirmations but wouldn't refund his $$. He was furious because it was several thousand dollars. There are even a couple of people II took action against because they appeared to be renting exchanges, but they weren't.

If you rent an exchange to someone and II finds out, they will cancel the exchange. So your renter shows up at the destination and finds out there is no reservation in their name. They have a contract with you and you have to provide the accommodations you promised. It's not worth the risk.

Thanks for the info, LAX Mom. Once again, I hate for it to go unused, but I'd rather do that than to risk having my account canceled.

I do understand their position but wish there was some way to give it back without incurring another set of exchange fees.

If you do it in the distressed section to a fellow tugger or if you rent it to a friend to cover costs, II will never find out for one, so no issues. Also, when you purchase a getaway, at the time of purchase you can have someone else pay for it on the phone with the agent, along with a guest cert for that person. That is effectively renting it too, if we are calling recoupment rent. So I am still confident that recoupment will likely reside no issues, as the spirit of II's restriction is to prohibit making a profit off their deals for members.

If you choose to eat it, your prerogative, but I think it is unnecessary.

One other thing. This was a getaway, so no MF recoupment involved. Renting to cover "phantom" costs could be viewed as renting for profit as far as II is concerned. That is the more probable issue as I see it.

I assumed the statement was more a figure of speech as in just letting it go to waste. But are you sure that it tax deductions are only earned from donating entire ownerships? I thought if you donated a week you own for a given year to charity in lieu of using it, you could write off your MFs?

Yes, I'm very sure about this. You cannot deduct a single year's use on your taxes.
