So even if a on-site restaurant is not listed on the cert it may still be excluded? I just saw on TUG, that LG Smith in Aruba doesn't take the cert, but yet its not listed on the cert as an exclusion.

Hi,
I just double-checked and mine definitely doesn't list LG Smith. I'm sure it doesn't matter, and I assume it won't be honored there based on what other Tuggers have recently said, but I do think it is interesting that its not listed on my particular cert.

Regards.

Where do you purchse the 2 for 1 dinner certificates? Also, has anyone used them in Palm Springs?

Thank you,

on marriott web site

It is very hard to find the certificates on the web site. Log on to www.marriott.com - at the bottom of the page [need to scroll down] you see "gift certificates". Click on that and it takes you to a page with both dine and gift certificates.

I just ordered two diner certificates for my upcoming stay in Aruba. They came the next day although I live in Canada and the DHL package was opened by customs.

It is a great deal.

Same here. We're going 2/7-2/14. Even though its no good at LG Smith's, it good at the other restaurant, Simply Fish, I think that's the name, and that appears to be a good place, so the cert is a great value. I know it was when we used it in Maui last Feb. We had great apps, caesar slad, surf and turf, and banana foster type dessert that was outstanding. Easily saved $50-$75 on a great meal.

Regards.

I used them at Desert Springs at the Tuscany January 08. Excellent

While there I inquired about using them at Mikado, They said OK.

I also used them at VUE in Laguna Cliffs Resort and Spa in February 08. Same dinner as Palm Springs. If you go here get there early for drinks at sunset in the Commodore Deck and after dinner they have music on the deck

We just used ours for 4 of us at The Mikado at the JW in Palm Desert. We really had a good time, and were delighted with how well they were received. I suppose that's to be expected, since I think they get their full 20% tip. The certificates are worth their weight in gold, if they're used advantageously.
I would suggest that, the way things change so quickly, a call to the hotel or the restaurant, in advance, would be wise.

My wife and I celebrated our aniversary ay Canyon villas and wanted to use it at jw next door. I called in advance to marriott to confirm it vaildity of cert and restaurants at JW and was supposed to be no problem. Called canyon villas before as well, no prob. Went to Roy's had a terrific meal as stated on the cert. Manager said at the end of meal no way. Spoke with MOD at JW useless, as well as Canyon villas, as well as marriott directly. Had a disapointing night do to marriott cert program. Be carefull on the cert, cert says it is only vaild for cost to 100, not cover excess of 100. When you actually pay more like 115 including charges to mail to house. The next morning the canyon villas management took care of the bill in full some accounting thing and i gave them the cert. I would not use or advise it no matter what the restaurant marriott or vendor. I would have been very upset if i purchased this for a family or friend to use and they would go through what i went through. I understand some others think the gift cert is great, and thats great, fwiw, my 2 cents, i would not do it again, especially for a special occasion.

using dinner certificates at lg smith in aruba

We just came back from aruba last week, went to lg smith with our certificates, were actually seated, showed our certificates to the waiter who brought over the manager, who said they stopped allowing the certificates last month. That means in Aruba, you can now only use them at Simply Fish, which does not have a very extensive menu to choose from. We decided we are never going to purchase the certificates again, too hard to use them.

We are going on December 7th staying at the Surf club, because our home resort - the Ocean Club was fully booked.

Our plan is to use them at Simply Fish. My wife and I love the menu with lots of choice and superb presentation.

I'm quite sure it says on the certificate to present it to the server when you order. I would never assume a restaurant would accept it without verification. I called member services, my Marriott "assistant" (who didn't know what I was talking about), I tried to call the restaurant directly, but got another Marriott employee, who assured me all their restaurants are run by Marriott. Then, when we checked in, I asked the girl to check. She called the restaurant, and assured me they accepted the certificates. We then presented the certs to the server before we ordered dinner. How distressing it must be to enjoy a lovely dinner, and then find out it didn't work!

We used the certificate at Simply Fish in Aruba to cover a $225 bill (ordered the highest price items which were delicious) in October.

Does anyone know if they are accepted at Blu in the St. Kitts Marriott (going in March )?

Thanks for the info

Does Marriott have a list somewhere that shows exactly which restaurants excepts it? If not, maybe we could make one list and have everyone add to it.

Bob -

It should be okay. See the excluded restaurants in post #2.

Adam -

See the list of allowed (except as specifically excluded) restaurants in post #2. You can also see the same info by clicking on the Terms & Conditions link at the Marriott Dinner for Two page. However, as suggested elsewhere in this thread, it's worth checking in advance and, as the T&C state, present the certificate when ordering, not when the bill comes.

Joe, you mentioned using your certificate in Maui last year. Did you use it at Longboards at the Maui Ocean Club? They normally do not accept it. We were there in Feb and I called and asked before we went to dinner and they told us that they would accept. We gave them the certificates and verified again when we were seated and ordered our food and during our appetizers they asked to see the certificate once more. The manager came over and told us that they would not accept this particular type of certificate. I protested and explained that I called first, asked when we were seated and further explained that we would not have ordered appetizers etc. if we knew they would not accept them. After going back and forth they ended up taking them, but it affected the dinner experience for us. Too much effort. The manager told us that they see several different types of gift certificates and showed us on the back of the certificate where it says not good at MVCI resorts. I did not read the fine print. So the only MVCI resorts that accept them are the ones that are attached to a regular Marriott Hotel Resort.

As I have posted earlier, I have used them at th JW Marriott Desert Springs and received excellent value. (Before being seated we asked the manager to verify its use.) Just triple check before ordering!

I used on 2/07 before it became LB. I had thought it was still allowed there. Since I had thought I heard the menu had basically stayed the same, I looked foward to using again in Maui 2/10.

It sucks when they remove value like that. I'll be using one in Aruba at Simply Fish in 2/09, so hopefully it is as good a value as I thought the previous one was.

Regards.

So even if a on-site restaurant is not listed on the cert it may still be excluded?

Correct. I had that experience in Europe. Restaurants on site at Marriott hotels were not specifically excluded. I even called Marriott to ask if they accepted the cert. Marriott quoted the standard language to me, and I asked them specifically, "does X restaurant take it?" I was told that they did. But, when I got to Europe, I was told by the restaurant that they did not take it.

I told them that Marriott had specifically told me that they would accept it. The response: "Marriott was mistaken." So, I contacted Marriott again, at which point Marriott told me that they were mistaken and that the restaurant did not take it.

Bottom line: use these certs at your own peril.

P.S. -- If it helps, regardless of what the cert says, they pretty much won't take them unless:

1. It is a Marriott owned and operated restaurant;

2. It is attached to a hotel, and not just a timeshare property; and

3. It is not a holiday.

Your #1, 2 & 3 are good advice and all three are covered by the T&C. (See the link in my earlier post for full T&C.)

Actually, number 1 is not covered by the T&C. It says that the cert "may not" be honored by a non-Marriott owned restaurant, and that you should check first. But, even if you check and they say that it will be honored, it still may not.

Edit: We're going to Hawaii in about two weeks, and I just found out that the d.k. Steakhouse in the Waikiki Marriott does not take them. So, on Oahu, the only Marriott restaurants that honor them are the Kuhio Beach Grill (buffet) and the Moana Terrace (pool bar).

What about at the JW Marriott in Ko'Olina? I thought a couple of those restaurants took these certificates. ?

I know that the Azul Restaurant does not take them, and the ones at the Ko'Olina don't take them because it's a timeshare. So, perhaps the pool bar at the Ihilani takes it, as well, but I don't know of any others, and the other restaurants are listed as "offsite." I notice there's no listing of Roy's at all, so I guess it closed (it used to be on the golf course).
