At our home Marriott resort June 2015, we bought a lot of Destination points on the promise from the sale agent that these points could be used on our upcoming leaf tour in New England. We were told that we would have a personal contact person to assist when and as needed in using the points. Our resort sales agent is no longer employed with Marriott. After weeks attempting to get information from her, we are now told that everything she said was a lie. There is no personal contact person and you cannot make reservations the morning of your need and there are no destinations in the area we are to travel that accept destination points. Marriott offers no help whatsoever with the problem. We have refused to pay Marriott and are contemplating a lawsuit against Marriott for providing false information. Has anyone had a similar experience of this type of tragedy?

Welcome to TUG!!

Certainly not trying to be an arbitrator between what was said, but technically speaking, you can trade a portion of your Destination points into Marriott Reward points that can then be used for booking Marriott hotels which are scattered all over the New England area. Such a booking can be done fairly close to check in, as long as there is availability for a MR points night at that particular hotel. Also, there is a MVC resort in Boston (Marriott's Custom House) that you can use your Destination Points at, but you are unlikely to get in there unless you booked quite a ways out.

Also, you do get a Vacation Ownership Advisor assigned to you, but most just call the phone number and deal with whomever they get.

Without being there, its hard to say how much the truth was stretched, but based on those 2 things, there is at least some merit to what story you were told.

That said, you sound very frustrated, and hopefully by sticking around TUG and reading a lot and asking a lot of questions here on the Marriott board, you can learn enough to find out how to best use your points so that you can get enjoyment out of them in the future.

I'm not sure that aside from the gap between your expectations and what is available, that there is a "tragedy" here. More than once I've left the sales session with an exaggerated vision of what was available but there was always an underlying truthfulness about what was being purported to be the benefits.

From my experience everything you understood to be true is, in fact, true. It just isn't quite as clearcut as you might have had the impression it is. Yes, we've had multiple "ownership advisors" over the years and some were better than others but generally anyone who answers the phone can help you. I love rewards points, use them extensively - but I earn them on my Marriott card, not by trading DP for them. Are they the best way to use Destination Points? Probably not. But any serious traveler also recognizes that the travel packages aren't particularly great "deals" but are not out of line with what other companies sell as total packages . . . ie. Viking River Cruises. I stick to using my Destination Points to vacationing in Marriott Vacation Club properties, they seem to be give me the best bang for my buck.

There's a lot to learn about maximizing the value of what you've purchased. That's what I've seen discussed here a lot and why I finally joined.

Anyone who has ever attended a Marriott sales presentation has probably been lied to. I know we were. It's too bad you didn't know about (or check) TUG before you made the purchase. Isn't there a time period where you can cancel the sale? I assume since you're writing this post, that has come and gone. I second the advice that says to visit this site often, ask a lot of questions, and find out the best way to get the most out of your points. I'm not sure you have a case if you pursue a lawsuit. It would be your word against his/hers, and all of the legal stuff is spelled out in the documents that you signed. (I'm not a lawyer so I really have no idea.)

Whilst it is not really an issue for me, after so many years of ownership, I can well understand the frustration when promised a personal Vacation Advisor to find you do not have one assigned to you.
My account profile on my-vacationclub.com shows:-
Vacation/Holiday Advisor
No Advisor on file.

I hope this helps

Many, many people on Tug have really gotten taken by salespeople. At least you are part of Marriott's Vacation Club, which in my estimation is the best timeshare company in the world, and you'll really enjoy your membership.

If you don't have an advisor call Marriott's Customer Service. If you ask any vacation advisor who answers the phone they can either give you the customer service number or connect you.

I'm wondering, did your salesman give you Marriott Reward Points as an incentive when you bought your club destination points? Is that what you meant? If that's the case those points should show up in your account when you close. I know that's not what you wanted to hear but hang in here and you'll soon be planning lovely vacations

Every Marriott sales person needs a "sales-o-meter" behind them. The meter would go from:

True
True within certain constraints
True but ask me what I really mean
Maybe
Maybe but ask for clarification
False
False please shut up and sign the paperwork already

You omitted True-- But I am leaving out a lot of details that can impact your ability to use your points. As in 1500 points won't get you into a top Marriott for more than a few days.
