i recently booked for nights in a courtyard marriott using only points(beautiful hotel for cat 2!). i understand u do not get free breakfast even with gold status when using points but i do not see nights credit showing up on my account yet. do u not get nights credit if u book with points? Also, 3 nights ago my parents stayed at a seattle marriott paid through my Credit card, not on points, will i get points and night credit?

No Courtyards in the Marriott system serve a free breakfast. However, many have a Bistro area which serves breakfast for a fee. Any stays that are point stays do NOT generate points or nights credit.

Additionally, if your parents had a room under your name and your Marriott Rewards number, you might be able to get both night credits and spending credits. However, front desk personnel usually ask for identification. That means that they might not credit the nights to your account because you were not actually staying in the room. You would get the spending credit as it was your card that got used.

You could log on to Marriott Rewards Insiders website to re-ask this question, or you could call the Marriott 800 number to confirm my understandings.

My impression is that nights paid for with MR points don't count as nights for elite level purposes.

Does anyone know whether that's correct? We just stayed 5 nights in a Vancouver Residence Inn, and it didn't seem to add to our nights.

In my wife's account, we have 39 nights this year. We are scheduled for 4 Newport Coast nights in November, and 5 Canyon Villa nights in January. What will it take to get to Gold status?

(To the OP, sorry for the hijacking.)

Yes, that is correct.
Nights stayed using MR Points don't receive Elite nights credit.
I sort of understand, as they view it as getting rewarded twice, but it is still a shame anyway.

thanks for the replies everyone. i guess it can take up to 10 days for a hotel to post points according to MR agent. i think gold staus is something like 50 nights which i will not attain until i maybe retire some day! we have 37 due to my husbands work.

The free breakfast for Gold and Platinum status in fact applies to points stays as well as to cash stays. However, it does not apply at all Marriott brands, essentially only the full service brands. Courtyard does not offer free breakfast even with a cash stay by an elite member.

You won't get elite night credit for points based stays. Simply using your MR credit card to pay for a stay won't get you the elite night credit. You will earn 5 points per dollar when your credit card statement runs, but no nights. The only way to get the nights is for you to actually have booked the stay in your account and/or with your MR number attached to them. If the stay was reserved outside of Marriott.com, you might not get the credit as Expedia and other bookings don't always qualify.

But it never hurts to ask. Last time I stayed at a Courtyard we were just asking about the breakfast options and the night clerk was nice enough to offer us three free passes for the morning. It's amazing how much better food tastes when it's free.
