We are planning a trip to Oahu and was looking into possibly taking a tour and purchasing a unit. I would only buy resale but thought I would ask for some recommendations and comments on which properties and what any available packages that people have done or know about.

Thanks.

I was at Marriott's Ko'Olina TS last month on a preview package that included a free car rental, $75 in Marriott bucks, and 10,000 AA miles. I can't remember where I got the offer, but here's a link to the current one if you have an Amex card:

Marriott has 4 TS resorts in Hawaii.

In Maui, there is the Maui Ocean Club, located on Kaanapali Beach, the first phase is a hotel converted to TS and the next two phases/towers are TS from the ground up.

In Kauai, there are two TS resorts.
-Kauai Beach club, which is converted a wing (or two) of a large Marriott hotel near the airport.
-Waiohai, a TS resort built from the ground up on the south-east coast of the island called Poi-pu

On Oahu, on the southwest side of the island is Ko Olina. A great new resort, but really far away from the Honolulu area.

So you first should do some research into which of these islands interest you. Do you want a converted hotel - TS or a resorts built as a TS from the get go.

Ko'Olina is between 20 and 30 min from Honolulu, depending on time of day and where in Honolulu you are going. Most around here do not consider this "really far away". It is closer to Honolulu airport than Maui Ocean Club is to Kahului airport.

We purchased the "preview package" and stayed in April and it was a great value. If more than two definitely upgrade to the full 1BR unit, only +$100 for the stay. The sales presentation was painless and they were very nice. Paying for parking of ~ $20/day was disappointing, but the only additional expense. We may do it again in two years :D

Interestingly the parking is LESS there than Hilton.

The Hilton is on Waikiki beach and space and parking is very limited (and IMO a car is not needed).

Ko'Olina is bascially in the middle of nowhere with tons of space which is why paying for parking feels like a ripoff, when a car is absolutely necessary.

It's a little further than that. The airport is probably 30-35 minutes and to get to the Waikiki area is probably 45 minutes. That's without traffic and traffic an be really bad in Honolulu. During rush hour those times should be doubled.

Kapolei is a really nice town that's very close and has lots of the shopping that people would need as well as a good movie theater.

Plus there is a good shopping center a couple of exits down from Kapolei at Waikele. There are pretty good restaurants and shops in Waikele.
