We just returned from a wonderful week in Cancun. We stayed at the Royal Mayan and had a wonderful time.....again.

Several months ago, I had ordered on line the ahcacao chocolate. For the life of me I couldnt remember the name, so when we were at the airport in the duty free shop I saw some chocolate and was hoping I was getting the same quality..

The Maria Tepozteca Chocolate is awful. It tastes so bad that even my son spit it out. Just a warning. It is sooooo bad. It was $10 a bar and I bought several. :wall:

Some of the Mexican chocolate you might see is not eating chocolate, but rather for hot cocoa. That type of chocolate is indeed nasty tasting.

I am a big hot chocolate drinker in the winter. I just bought a "set" which consists of 4 cups, a pot for heating the milk in the micro and a frother. It includes several recipies for hot chocolate and 1 is for Mexican hot chocolate. The Mexican recipe calls for Mexican bitter sweet chocloate bar plus the addition of sugar. I'll bet that is what you bought.

As an aside, I used to buy Hershey's or Nestle's chocolate until last year when in Calif and I tasted Ghiradelli cocoa and fell in love with it. I now buy the Ghiradelli powder in the grocery store (a little more expensive but well woth it) and that is what I drink .

I gave my chocolate bars away. The people were so happy and yes, they will be using it for cooking and hot cocoa. I thought it would be as good as the ahcacao chocolate I bought on line.

Learn something new all the time. Thanks for setting me straight.

I bought a bar of that $10 Maria Tepozteca chocolate also, and I wish I had bought five of them! I don't think you can get it in the US.. and to me, it's great. It's dark, a bit of cinnamon, and with crunchy bits of the nibs still in it. Which kind of chocolate did you get? I saw Vanilla and the Cinnamon, and only tried the Cinnamon.

if you love mexican hot chocolate,"Ibarra" is fantastic and can be found in many grocery stores and ranch markets.(at least in california and arizona). My mexican peeps from L.A. swear by it. Fantastic after tamales on Christmas eve!
