We are headed to Marco Island for the first time next month. My wife and I both enjoy snorkeling while in Hawaii. I found a few travel guides that mention scuba and snorkel near Marco, but then some others that said the water is not that clear.

I was curious if the snorkeling is decent around Marco, and if so can you do this off of the beach or are the reefs father out so you need a boat tour.

We have lots of other stuff planned, but thought it might be fun to try snorkeling someplace other than Hawaii...

Thanks

There's no real reefs near Marco. It's more a sand + shelling place.
With masks, you might find some shells before they're bleached + broken.
If you're into mangrove islands, dolphins & shells, shell out for a boat tour.

Thanks, we had wanted to get out on the water. I know my wife save a few boat tour ideas, will have to check where they visit and make sure we hit the mangrove islands.

Snorkeling is not really a thing on Marco. Anywhere you might see something under the water, you might meet up with something you don't want to meet up with. There are tons of eco tours on the island that take you out to the 10 thousand Islands or out to see Cape Romano and the dome houses. The airboats that take you in the "Everglades" don't take you in the Everglades, but through some mangrove swamps. A lot of the tours take you out to little islands to look for shells.

I live in Naples, lived on Marco for 5 years. Have been snorkeling in Hawaii . If you want to take a day trip from Marco head to https://pennekamppark.com/snorkeling-tours/. We did this for the first time last November. The boat takes you out to a reef. I thought the snorkeling was as good as any I have done in the Caribbean.
