Hi, thinking of traveling to Spain in January with three kids, 15,12,5 We like to eat out (a lot) and will probably have a rental car. Hoping to see Gibraltar, Tangiers and Ronda. Which resort do you recommend? Is it easy to drive in Spain? We have no problem driving in NY, SF, LA. Thanks!

We stayed at both resorts a couple of years ago, and loved each. They are not far enough apart to make a huge difference, but our overall favorite was Playa Andaluza, probably influenced by the oceanfront 3 bedroom we had there, compared to the oceanview 2 bedroom at Marbella. We also had really great experiences with the staff at Playa Andaluza, and just OK at Marbella. In January you probably won't be using the beach or outdoor pools much, but we liked the beach better at Playa, and the view from the restaurant better at Marbella. Although there are lots of restaurants nearby, I think Marbella had more within really close walking distance.

Gibraltar is really easy to do on your own. Just park the car on the Spanish side and walk across the runway or take the bus into town. We loved Ronda in April, and it should be less crowded in January. There are many closer, less tourist oriented, white villages as well, but Ronda is one of the most spectacular. The Marriott trip to Morocco was cancelled due to wind, and since I had already been to Morocco and my husband did not have a day trip on his must do list, we didn't try again.

Driving is only difficult if you are not used to driving stick shift on hills. Also, getting used to entering the main highway along the coast from a dead stop, since there are stop signs at each entrance. The smallest car you can manage comes in handy on the very narrow streets in many of the villages. Even with a small car for just the two of us, we had to fold in the mirrors in places in several towns. However, on the long uphill grade up to Ronda, we paid the price with not enough power to stay out of the truck/slow lane. In Ronda, not a problem, but in Arcos de la Frontera and several others, we were happy for the small car.

Have fun! We are going back to Playa this April, and if I can pick up another week at Marbella or Son Antem, we'll enjoy another week again there as well.

Playa Andaluza is a little closer for your preferred trips, but as Ann in CA says both resorts are fairly close to each other (either side of Marbella)
We prefer Playa, most prefer Marbella but you can'y really go wrong with either.
Probably teenagers will find it livelier with more to do if you stay at the Marbella resort.

May I piggyback?

We're going to Marbella in Oct (early). We'll fly into Barca or Madrid; maybe in one, out the other.
Any thoughts about taking train south and then renting car? Any stops along the way to Malaga that might be worth a day or two? (TS references in any of the arrival/en route cities would also be welcome)
cheers.

I spent every summer in Spain (usually Playa Andaluza :D).

Best is to fly to Malaga through Madrid.

If you want to experience the train, take the high-speed train from Madrid to Malaga (called AVE, very confortable, good price in business, about 3 hours, you can book online or onsite).

I will not recommend you to drive from Madrid to Marbella...

For rental cars, I usually book them at the Malaga airport (so, I take a taxi from the Malaga train station to the airport. Easy and unexpensive). Another option (which I will recommend to you) is to have the concierge book you a transportation (from train station/airport to Marbella Beach). Then, the concierge can reserve a rental car at the resort for one week (prices are reasonable).

Quite a distant, not sure about rental cars (between these 2 countries) and I will not recommend during the winter season. I recommend you fly from Malaga to Lisbon. Check on Kayak, direct flights are affordable (1h30 duration).

PS: BTW definitely Marriott Playa Andaluza... I do not know why Marriott Marbella Beach has a better reputation (Brits for sure...), but you cannot beat Playa Andaluza (newer, indoor pool, overall location, etc.).

"I do not know why Marriott Marbella Beach has a better reputation (Brits for sure...)"?
Many, probably even most of my fellow Brits I speak to favour Playa Andaluza, as do I.
Reading all the reviews over the years, I would have surmised that it is (US folk for sure...)
Perhaps we could have a poll one day?

Renting from the Malaga train staton is cheaper

It's cheaper to rent cars from the Malaga train station than it is from the airport. We do that regularly, as we usually spend some time in Malaga (love that town) before heading down the coast.

Another option is to take the train from Malaga or from the airport to Fuengirola (it's cheap), and pick up your rental car there. That worked well for us once when renting from Avis. One of you does have to walk a few blocks from the Fuengirola station to get to the Avis office to pick up your car, though. There is no extra charge for returning your car to the airport on departure.

I would have no preference between either in January, had it been summer I would have gone for Andaluza because of the kids pool.

Andaluza does have the benefit of being close to Benahavis which has some very good restaurants however I'm not sure how many would be open during the winter.

Driving will be fine although be prepared to drive a manual or pay extra for an automatic. The main route from Malaga is usually quite busy but nothing on the scale of LA, NY or SF.

Ronda is fantastic although it will be cold in January. The drive is not for everyone, steep mountain roads, very twisty and the locals have a tendency to drive fast and sometimes dangerously when overtaking. I've always been thankful for having a powerful car when driving that route.

Also I would second the advice about Gibraltar and parking on the Spanish side. The queues to drive into Gibraltar are ridiculous and there's no real benefit to having a car there. There are plenty of underground car parks on the Spanish side just across from the border crossing, do some quick research before you go and you can input it into your GPS. Once you've crossed the border you'll likely be accosted by people offering you guided tours of the rock etc in a minibus, either a private tour or group tour. We've done two of these, the first was very good the second not so. My advice would be to take a tour, it's much better than trying to do it on your own, but go with your instincts when choosing to accept an unsolicited offer.

Yes, Ronda is a great place to visit but I agree with you about the road there.
The first time we did the journey, there was a heavy, low mist over the road and we were stuck behind a line of heavy goods vehicles.
They did have plans to build a motorway link, but these were shelved
http://www.theolivepress.es/spain-news/2013/03/10/genal-valley-motorway-plans-shelved/
and quote
"the decision to shelve the plans means the existing road from Ronda to San Pedro will continue to be the most dangerous in the Malaga Province"!
Nevertheless, it is still well worth the effort.

We flew into Barcelona. Spent 5 days there then flew to Granada. We picked up a car there. Stayed there 1 night then drove to Marbella. The roads are fabulous throughout the country. It's the best thing Franco did for the country. We rented a car with an automatic transmission. Just book it well in advance.

FWIW, we have found the Benahavis restaurants to be open in March. And there are no parking problems at that time of year.

There are also excellent restaurants in Jimena de la Frontera (Restaurante El Ventorrillero, Luis the proprietor...his mother does the cooking...closed Mondays, it helps to speak a bit of Spanish, but it's not absolutely necessary);
in San Pablo (La Estacion, Nieves Rodríguez and son Samuel proprietors, closed Mondays);
in Gaucin (El Atico 1pm Thu-Sun & 8pm fri-sat; La Granada Divino Thu-Sun, lunch Fri-Sun);
in Jubrique (Mesón La Pozuela (Helen & Barry, Dutch, closed Tuesdays, 5 tables, reservations advised);
in Colmenar (Rincon del Cani, closed Mondays);
in Benarraba (Hotel Restaurante Banu Rabbah);
and don't forget Casares.

We will be visiting them all (and some others) during our March month in Gaucin.

I think it's more the EU subsidies than Franco!
Without a doubt.
We have been back in South East Spain now for the last few weeks in Almeria and Murcia.
Everywhere we seem to go, there are half finished projects that the locals describe as "that was using Mrs Merkel's money" (I am sure much of it is ours too)
These include huge projects, including a new airport which has never opened and a major new coastal railway line which has everything in place except the tracks!
This was a "use it or lose it" funding scheme, but just crazy that they were never finished or opened.
