somehow i screwed up my email format. i want to get it back to the default setting where the sender is in the top window and when i click on the sender the message comes up in the bottom window. can anyone tell me how to do this?

What program are you using? Mail? Entourage? Outlook?

In any case, look for preferences under the File menu or the menu with the title of the software, and see if you can find something about display options.
