Is it locked with a password? If not, try to call the owner.

If you keep it charged and turned on, eventually someone will call it, that you can notify.

Sam has convinced the office to contact the prior guests for that unit. Unfortunately, they will only go the week before us. We are hoping for the best.

Take it to an Apple store. DH found an i-phone 5 on the side of a dirt road while out walking about a month ago. It was locked (with nearly full battery) so we took it to the local Apple store since neither of us have 'smart phones' & have no idea how to use them. Through some serial number Apple was able to contact the registered user. We were told they hadn't reported it missing or stolen so probably no longer wanted this one! It appears the Apple store disabled the phone. Now we have a locked & disabled phone that has since gone dead because we don't have a charger for it!

They don't have the medical ID on there, do they? You can access emergency contacts without unlocking the phone.

Hi Diane,

All we can get on the phone is that it has been disabled. We will try an Apple store today. Originally when we got the battery charged up, there was a family photo on it. Our fear is that there are photos on it the someone wants and may not be backed up elsewhere.

The resorts did call the folks who were in that unit two stays ago. They have yet to reach number one or three. We are hoping that works.

Thanks,

Kathleen

You are a really nice person to go to this work to return someone's phone. I honestly think there are a lot of people on this board that would do the same but it's really nice to see.

DS told us that many people have a "locate my phone" app on their phones. I don't understand it really, but he says if a person has it they can log onto their Apple account from a computer (or another phone) & the app will tell them where their phone is (if it is turned on & battery is ok). He once used it when he left his phone in a restaurant (but wasn't sure that's where he had left it).

Hopefully the Apple store can get a message to the registered owner for you.

I think locate my phone can be handy, but if your phone has been stolen or lost and you have no idea of where you left it, the following article about a young man who was murdered after confronting the thieves of his phone using the tracking capabilities ives some suggestions and cautions. Of course, I'm not saying every time you misplace your phone, you should think that you're going to be murdered getting it back, but just some common sense things:

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions and kind words. We are happy to attempt to reunite this phone with it's owner. I know that 99% of folks who saw the photo on the screen, would do the same.

Because the phone has been disabled, no function appears to be possible. We are hopeful that they reported it missing to Apple and had it D/C'd.

Nothing from the resort, yet. We will call again in a couple of hours, then off to the Apple Store.

If the phone has been disabled, the owner likely did that remotely when they noticed it missing. It's a feature of iPhones that can be activated via a computer or iPad.

If they registered it with Apple, the Apple Store can find them via the serial number.

Nice of you to go to the trouble of trying to find the owner.

BTW, I've added the Google Photo app to my iPhone that automatically backs up all my photos to the cloud and also adds them to my other iThingys. So as long as Google stays around (probably longer than me:D) I'll have my photos.

Cheers

Hi Tuggers,

The Apple store just wants us to leave them the phone and they will take care of it. They will not notify the owners and have them contact us.

AT&T will not contact the phone owner.

The resort says that neither of the other two(weeks) guests have called them back.

I do not believe that the phone and whatever photos will make it back to it's owner.

Thank you for all of your help and support. I am writing this off as unresolved.

I would not leave it with the Apple Store. They could find the owner and tell them how to contact you if they wanted to. I would try a different Apple store to see what they say. And shame on AT&T.

If it were me, I would leave it with Apple with your name and contact info. You've done more than enough already. ;)

If that's not something you're comfortable with, take to the police station and again leave you're contact info.

Cheers

Why not leave it at the Apple store? Makes sense to me. If the company has integrity, it will search for the owner. If not, you get no farther than you are today anyway.

My reasoning for saying that was that if the Apple stores are like some other phone stores I've been in, they are not always that companies employees but a franchise sort of place.

For some reason I just got suspicious about the person saying they couldn't get the owner in touch with the finder. In my mind someone was trying to pull a fast one, but that's just me.

The problem (as mentioned above) is that the employees can unlock it & reset it using the store's access to privileged info, then sell it to their friends on the side (pocketing the proceeds). DS knew a guy that was doing just that - until he got caught!

The best thing is, if you have an expensive phone, is to put one of those "locate my phone" aps on it then when you loose it arrange to meet the finder at a safe location (our provincial police stations offer their lobby) to get it back.

If I was the owner of that phone, I would not be very please if the Apple store gave my personal contact information to some stranger who claimed they found my phone! What guarantees are there that the person who claimed to find the phone did not steal it?

That Apple store employees did the absolute correct thing here. No doubt in my mind.

So tell me csxjohn, if you lost your phone, would you want your cell provider to give out your personal information?

You've got it backwards. I would want the store to give the owner of the phone my info so we could arrange to get it back to them.

Hi Tuggers,

We have given up on our quest to find the phone owner. We tried multiple ways and visits to Apple and AT&T. To be clear, we Never asked for information about the owner. We only asked that our contact number be given to them. Or to Apple/AT&T and they contact us.

Thank you for all of your suggestions and good thoughts.

I guess I don't understand. If you have given up and you still have the phone, why would it have been worse to just let Apple try and get it to the owner? If they got it the owner, great. If they didn't, the owner would be no worse off than you having the phone.

IMHO, Apple had the best chance to identify and contact the owner. I suppose you could have waited until they assured you they have the registered owner identity and then gotten a receipt from the Apple Store just in case the owner somehow contacted you so you could tell them where you left the phone.;)

I applaud your attempts to return the phone.

Cheers

Dear Skier,

And we would know that the Apple clerk did What with the phone?

For all who gave advice...My husband did track down the owner via a third party who gave the owner our phone number. She did not appreciate it at all. She said that the phone was for the kids and she did not care. She said that we could mail the phone to the resort and they would mail it to her.

If we should find another phone we would likely still try to find the owner. I'm just giving you the honest outcome of our experience.

Stay well.

Ah yes.... no good deed goes unpunished.

Well, here you go:

Kathleen: I applaud your honesty and your honest attempts to restore the phone to it's rightful owner. You are the kind of folks that influence others to do the right thing as well. Good Karma never goes to waste you know?

:cheer: Cheers to you!
