We are trying to plan a spring vacation...looking for somewhere near/in Cancun that will appeal to "everyone - ages 11-50"........"we" are a family of 7, does anyone know where can we get lodging for 7 or 8 together?

All the Royal resorts (my first choice/preference...given the ratings here at TUG) only sleep 6 according to the website. Can we find an equally great resort with 3 bedrooms? Or what are the chances do you think of geting a 2-bedroom & another unit (studio or one bedroom) right next door? Is this pretty easy to coordinate (especially if we want to rent($) from an owner?

Thanks for any advice/suggestions.

The Royal Resorts sleep six BUT you can add a 7th with payment of an extra fee to the front desk. I don't know how much, but you can double-check via the contact us links on royalresorts.com .

Two in the master bedroom, two in the living room on the two twin drop-down Murphy beds, and three in the second bedroom, which has two double beds, or they'll bring up a roll-away or crib for number 7.

Not 8, though, that's too many. At 7 or 8 I'd prefer to rent a two-bedroom and an extra lock-off room, either both at the Sands or both at any of the Tri-Royals (which are not far apart, connected via walkways). The chances of right next door are practically zero, because all units are fixed-location and owner-controlled, and you'd have to find two owners who had both deposited their units or who were both renting their units. Highly unlikely.

Renting from an owner is easy. Look here on the TUG Marketplace, omcancun.com, redweek.com, and royalweek.com. Contact the person, verify the ownership with the Royals' management, ISCO, at 1-800-930-5050, send deposit or full payment as agreed, and then the owner contacts ISCO which sends you the paperwork authorizing your occupancy and changes the name on that week/villa to yours.

Just my opinion, but I think it would be very "cozy" with 7 in any of the Royal Resorts. Your best bet if you want to stay at one of the Royals is to get a full villa and at least a lockoff. The only way you could guarantee location would be to rent from owners. As pjrose says, it will be highly unlikely to get 2 units next door to each other, BUT you could be selective about renting from owners and try to find units near each other. If you go that route, think about general location of the rooms...for example, if one unit is in phase 1, 5th floor on the north side of the large U, and the other is also on the same 5th floor, but on the south side of the U, those are not convenient at all. If you can't both on the north side 5th floor, you would be better getting a phase 11 unit on the 5th floor, south side, or even a unit on the same U side, but a floor up or down from the 5th. If you have never been to the Royals, I may be confusing you...sorry about that, but this is a lesson we learned the hard way a few years ago. :)

Royal alternative

Thank you for the info....maybe we can keep it to 7 and consider it "luxury camping".

But......if I wanted to look for an alternative to the "Royals" because I really want to keep the kids closer (like in the next room).....are there any Royal alternatives?

Maybe check...I recall one unit at the Royal Cancun (aka VCI) has 3BR and I think 3 BA. I recall the developers originally built it for themselves as a separate unit, it is C-1600. You could ask about it if interested. At last word it was available by the week like all the others.

Mayan Palace and Grand Mayan can sleep 8. They are about 1/2 way down the corridor between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. Very nice resorts! We have stayed in both of them. They are probably 20 miles south of the hotel zone Cancun. Villa Del Palmar has just completed a new resort going the other direction away from Cancun (I guess that would be North?) We haven't been to Cancun since it was built, but we have stayed in the other Villa Del Palmar newer resorts (Flamingos in Nuevo Vallarta and Arcos in Cabo) and I understand this newest one in Cancun is like them. So they would sleep 8 also, I think. Beautiful resorts with lots of onsite activities.

Mayan Palace and Grand Mayan can sleep 8.

We own a couple of weeks at Grand Mayan and you can really can sleep 8 as long as you rent the Grand Master Suite + Grand Master Room. It has 2 King-size beds (one in each of the 2 large bedrooms) and 3 sofa beds throughout. Depending on how much privacy the adults want you could split up the sleeping area a number of different ways.

There are some good pictures to give you an idea of the accommodations here http://www.mayanresorts.com/the-grand-mayan/accommodations-3.

Good luck and have fun!:)

A smaller group

We are looking to go next month to the Royal Mayan with a much SMALLER group instead of waiting till spring. I think we'll consider this first trip to Cancun an exploration trip to check out the area and different resorts. We'll leave the youngest kids at home and go with the adult children to scout out the resorts and areas. This will hopefully give us a much better idea about lodging options and areas we'd like to return to.

If it works out that we like it and think it would be good for the entire family we'll better understand areas and options.

Thanks for everyone's input - if we travel (as I hope we do) I'll post back a report.
