Tried searching for this, but did not find an answer readily.

I booked a 2 bedroom lock off unit at SDO and would like to lock it off after the fact into the big and small one bedroom units (with two separate reservation numbers). Can I do this? If it matters, this is my ownership unit and season. Do I call owner services?

Thanks in advance!

Yes - You call owner services. You can also put different names one each side, or deposit one or both sides.

You won't have two reservation numbers because you booked it as one unit. Sometimes they will allow you to split the reservation after the fact, thus allowing your other guest to check in to their side with a completely separate credit card, but not always. I've read owners at WKORV being told that they will not do this because they are at capacity (and presumably don't want to have to process a whole bunch of additional people for check-in).

No matter what, you have the discretion whether or not to code the keys so that they open up one or both doors. And you can put either or both sides in another person's name. The only issue may be blocking your guest from charging to your room.

Call owner services and ask.

This is not correct - You can call and get two separate confirmations, with two separate numbers, two separate names, two separate bills, and two separate keys.

Not always. There have been threads where they have told owners that they will not split reservations because they are at capacity. They've also had to cancel the original reservation and re-book as separate reservations.

Here's one thread:

Yes, but that is the only time I have ever seen that posted on TUG - it's rare. I help people split their reservations all the time, and that's the only time I've heard of that happening.

*Just so you know, whenever you change a Starwood reservation they rebook it - that's just how their system works. Often, one confirmation keeps the original confirmation number, and they rebook the other side with a new number. Sometimes the Rep can't do it themselves, and they refer it to inventory control. In that case, you usually get the new confirmation in 48 hours, but they won't lose the old Resv. or the new Resv's.

I agree that Starwood sometimes has reservation problems, but that is the exception, not the norm, and it would not keep me from asking to have my reservation split, if that's what I wanted.

The normal procedure is as I outlined it above - I do it all the time.

Of course he should ask Owner Services. I still don't know whether Owner Services was wrong in refusing to split a lockoff due to the number of check-ins on a particular day, or if they really do have the latitude to say no. Even though you manage a lot of reservations, we only get a small sample here, so we really don't know how many people have been denied.

So, because I've read where Owner Services has given owners flak for doing this on occasions, if I knew from the beginning that I was going to rent (to strangers) the other side of my unit, I'd book the two units separately from the beginning vs. booking them together and then trying to split them later. Not only would I not have to worry that Owner Services would stonewall me, but it would also decrease the chance that the other guests would be directly next to me. Not sure I'd want that. ("You call this ocean FRONT?" :annoyed:)

If I was going to rent to people that I knew, I'd book the 2 bdrm lockoff together.

Making 2 separate reservations is a good strategy if you know that you are going to rent one or both sides separately. But if you don't know your plans when you make the reservation, the best strategy is to make a 2 bdm. lock-off reservation, because that give you the option of renting the full two bedroom - or just one side or the other, at a later date.

If you split the reservation into 2 confirmations upfront, you can't automatically put them back together to make a 2 bdm. You have to start all over to do that, and at the popular resorts, most of the time there isn't a 2 bdm. available later.

Reporting back. I was able to call owner services and they were able to lock off my 2 bedroom and provide 2 separate reservation numbers for each of the one bedrooms. Thanks, again, TUG!
