No big surprise. California might as well just stay shut down and wait it out a bit longer.

While my initial reaction was 'Wow' upon further reflection it doesn't surprise me.

In terms of 'New cases per capita' California is leading the nation right now with the graph headed up, up, up. And most of the cases are concentrated in Southern California.

100% resale!!
I feel like the all people that complain about keeping everything closed still have a source of income. People who are pushing for reopening are doing it out of necessity. The unemployment system doesn't work and if I personally had to choose between Covid and homelessness, I'd rather get covid.

I feel for those who have been out of work. I feel for the small businesses that might not make it. But I also feel for the families who have lost loved ones. It's not just that you might "get" COVID. You might get it and pass it on. You might get it and die. You might get it and have complications afterwards. You did hear about the young woman who just had a heart lung transplant due to COVID? There is a very, very hard balance to be found.

Things can start opening up. But in many cases people take that as a sign that they don't need to take any precautions. We've seen sharp rises in the states around us where businesses have opened up, and now the cases are rising. Some areas, like Houston, are talking about shutting down again.

And....not sure if you read the article but it's the Disney employees that are quoted in this article complaining that they don't want to go back to work.

Ah yes, our wonderful unemployment benefits.

Keep in mind, to collect unemployment benefits, you have to be out of work “through no fault of your own,” meaning that people who quit or are fired for cause generally can’t collect. But that’s just one condition among many.

Another being, if your reason for separation from your last job is due to some reason other than a "lack of work", a determination will be made about whether you are eligible for benefits. At this time, don't count on it.

Of course regional differences also show up in maximum benefit amounts: Seven of the 10 states with the lowest maximum weekly benefits, $350 or less, are in the Southeast. States set different limits on how long residents can receive unemployment benefitswhile nearly all the states with the 10 highest maximums are in the Northeast or along the nation’s northern tier. Let's try to live off that sum.

It can be misguided to lump an entire state into a single statistic - including per capita.
CV breaks out in hotspots. These hotspots are directly correlated to population density, and/or the ability/desire to utilize safe practices to inhibiting viral transmission.

Somebody missed the concept that it is not only the individual at risk of CV, but those associated by contact with the individual (often unwillingly).

btw - interesting article (recent) on transmission.
(I know... Science... arg!)

Florida's unemployment benefits are awful: $275 a week, and they run out after only 12 weeks!

I can understand the local feelings. The more guests to Disneyland, the more chances for COVID-19 to spread to Anaheim and the surrounding area's.
