Aloha,
Like most roads in Kauai, its predominantly two lanes (1 each way). Depending on the time of day there could be lots of traffic until you get north of Kapaa. Its a beautiful drive. I recommend doing it in daylight for several reasons. There are potential rest stops along the way if that is important. I suggest you play with google maps and use street view in various spots to get a flavor of what you'll be experiencing.
The winding road and single lane bridges occur from Princeville down to Hanalei and beyond to Haena State Park.

You can avoid a great deal of traffic and enjoy some nice scenery if you take 581 around Kapaa. There's even a restroom at the parking lot for Opaeka‘a Falls.

If you are driving that stretch of road for the first time, I would avoid doing it in the dark.
