Lighthearted question: Ginger or Mary Anne ?

Star Trek Captains:
James T. Kirk... Jean-Luc Picard... Benjamin Sisko... Kathryn Janeway... or Jonathan Archer
-- My choices: 1-Picard, 2-Kirk, 3-Janeway.

I was surprised that anyone wound post this on TUG given it is socially inappropirate to compare women‘s looks. I am a Me Too type of person (not that Me Too is perfect but it is certainly a move in the right direction for future generations.) That is why I have not voted but I have been reading the posts out of curiosity. I think you are right that this reflects TUG demographics. Plus only old people would remember Mary Ann and Ginger. Technically, they were even before my time, and I am old.
Admiration of beauty does not go out of style but social norms are changing about how you treat and talk about women in public. Even before Me Too, it was controversial to rate women solely on looks. Maybe 50 years ago that was okay, but not know. Times change. Admire all you like but keep the physical competition where women are objectified on their looks in your head.
Is it possible that you may be incorrectly assuming the comparisons being made are based on womens' appearances?

For example, when people prefer Mary Ann over Ginger, you seem to be presuming they find her more physically attractive. I seriously doubt that is the case. If it were simply a question of beauty, Ginger would be the choice - after all, her role was pretty much just to be a not-so-bright bimbo. What many people are saying is that they find Mary Ann more attractive, not prettier. Certainly that is the case for me.

Which means that people are judging the whole person, not just the looks - and unless I've totally misunderstood your question, isn't that what you are advocating for?

I noticed without sports, I have watched more of things like Gilligan's Island.

I thought I'd post a question asking who is "more attractive", or "who do YOU prefer"

This is simply from a LOOKS perspective---disregard all of the rest of character on the show, etc.

Ginger, or Mary Anne ?

I will give my preference later, but want to let you know I 'switched' about two years ago---and I am in my 60s.

Pat

Well you know I pick Mary Ann.

Thomas Crown Affair:

Faye Dunaway or Rene Russo?

Steve McQueen or Pierce Brosnan?

There can be only one and that is definitely James Tiberius Kirk.

Country music singer Bobby Bare had a song called "Numbers" released in 1980.

point taken ;)

I'm old

had to google to see if they were still alive

From "WKRP in Cincinnati"...
Bailey or Jennifer?
Andy, Less, Herb, Venus, Dr. Johnny, or Arthur?

[note that original response has been significantly edited.]

A frame that I have sometimes used for questions such as this is to ask whom would I prefer to have sitting in the seat next to me on a 4-hr flight.

Already asked up thread - Bailey over Jennifer. Not even close (though closer than Mary Anne vs. Ginger, because Jennifer actually had a significant role beyond eye candy).

Among the guys, Venus (Tim Reid) was the most interesting to me, probably followed by Andy. Johnny Fever was too much like the self-absorbed idiots I knew in college.

Les, Herb, and Arthur were simply caricatures, though Arthur's character did get some development.

As Johnny Fever used to say, "WKRP - with more music and Les Nessman."

Foghorn Leghorn or Yosemite Sam?

Coyote or Road Runner?
I thought Road Runner an arrogant little snot, and Coyote a crafty thinker.

This was the OP’s question. I did not misinterpet it. Maybe we should compare which celebs look hottest in a mask, simply from a LOOKS perspective. At least that is more current.

But who is cuter? This thread is about LOOKS, not character.

I googled it too. Mary Ann and Ginger are the last two living characters from the show. Both in their 80s.

In terms of looks... Road Runner was obviously in better shape, thin and svelte.
Coyote, OTOH, had more meat on his bones, which better fits my style, so...

Good response. That was the OPs original question. And in that regard, I think your response is on point.

But I would say that almost all of the follow-up responses deviated from that parameter. I think almost every response fell into the category of whom would we prefer. In that vein I take exception to what seems to me to be trashing the entire thread.

Rather our TUG "demographic" almost automatically morphed the topic in a direction that was more sensitive to your concern, without engaging in shaming and blaming. I think that's a good trait - something that seems to be in short supply these day.

So in time of pandemic, with looming disruptions in the animal protein food supply chain, you opt for more meat on the bones vs. thin and svelte. Seems pretty savvy to me.

Luckily, I am not to the point of eyeing the raccoons and squirrels as dinner.... I couldn't possibly eat one of "my" deer herd that visits twice daily.

A few years ago there was an 8-pointer who feasted regularly in our yard. I haven't seen him for awhile though.

As the OP, I posted the word "Lighthearted".

That's what I intended this thread to be-----a few posts seem to think I underestimated............

Thanks for clarifying. I noticed you said lighhearted but I think if you had asked the question differently, like which character do you like better and why, I do not think it would have triggered me. What was triggering to me was when you asked only about looks. I think everyone's responses on the question were fine and it did not lead me to think we have a demographic problem with this issue, other than you sort of have to be old to be comparing them in the first place. I do not think that Tuggers are so shallow. I was happy that most said they liked Mary Anne better because this showed me they were evaluating on factors beyond looks, even though the question asked soley about looks. Maybe there was an innocent reason why you asked only about looks specifically?

Glitz and Glamor (Ginger) versus Homey and Perky (Mary Ann)

Shrug. What is your preferred lifestyle? (Both were quite pretty.)

(Or if your into Old Money, Mrs. Howell.)
