Received a mailing from AMAC (the alternative to AARP) alerting us to Lifeline Screening that will be available for one day in our area. They do some kind of screening for plaque in your carotid artery, A-fib, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and peripheral arterial disease screening. For $135. $10 extra for osteoporosis risk assessment. Usually not covered by insurance. We are new to the area and have yet to find a new general practitioner....things are really still backlogged.
Has anyone had this done? Want to make sure it’s not a waste of time and money. My husband is more at risk for things than I am...family history and all.
Thanks in advance.

I had it done once, it was good for peace of mind, but my GP kind of poo-pood it when I showed him the report. The price is not bad. I’ve had the same scans ordered by my cardiologist since then when I was diagnosed with aFib, which can be detected with an ekg also. My BP cuff shows I have irregular heartbeat also. Now I see them selling something on TV you put your fingers on and check with a smartphone app.

There was a spot on my lung I asked him about, he said did you ever live in Ohio? What? Darned if I didn’t spend my teenage years there. He said it looked like an old infection from Ohio Valley fever, caused by a fungus. Who knew? Histoplasmosis.

sorry, rambled on a bit there :)

Near the sea.
Lifeline picked up my cousins clogged artery in his neck. Very Serious. Had to have surgery.
So we then did it once. We were fine. Probably won’t do it again.

My husband and I both had one done back around 2009. It was an easy process and turned out to be beneficial in my case because it picked up thyroid nodules I wasn't aware I had and also picked up a couple of big gallstones I also didn't know about. Turned out the gallstones were the reason I had so many issues with pain in my stomach at times. I had always written it off to ulcers but nope it was the old gallbladder and a couple of big stones (one was the size of a golf ball). So, it found those issues with my health and allowed me to get treatment for both. My husband who is 11 years older came through it with flying colors - absolutely perfect health! So, for me it was worth it and it was worth it. We've actually talked about doing it again but just haven't done it.

This is actually the real deal. DS20 has random fast HB (200+ every few months) and wore a monitor for 30 days, even had an episode that the monitor didn't pick up. DH (veterinarian) and ask cardiologist who said to get it to monitor for future. DH used to have an (earlier version) attachment for his phone years ago to do spot checks on pets when not near other equipment and said it worked well.

Thanks everyone for your input and stories. Seems like a worthwhile thing to do and really not all that costly. Very non invasive.....you don’t even have to change out of your street clothes.

Will set up an appointment. Amazing things we have these days.

Update: we went for our scans about 11 days ago and just got our results in the mail ( if they see anything during the scans that’s really bad, they let you know). Husband was in good shape....he was worried about his risk of an aneurysm due to family history. No issues there, but his BMI is too high and he needs to lose weight.

My cholesterol is elevated and I’m at high risk with osteoporosis. But my BMI is normal.

I’m glad we had it done. I’ve been foolish with not taking calcium. Not sure about the cholesterol. I don’t eat a lot of fatty things and don’t use much butter. Will have doctor check that further. If I recall my dad had high cholesterol and he was a string bean.

Some bodies "manufacture" cholesterol, regardless of what you eat. Dad's did, and mine does too. I eat a low-fat diet and have high cholesterol, so I have to take medication for it since I can't lower it naturally.

Thanks for that. I’ll be following up with blood work and a dexascan (?) for the osteoporosis.
