I had never considered joining the points system but am now giving it some thought. I'm starting to think that it would actually work for us as we get older and hopefully have more time for vacation.

I have not kept up with all the threads on here pertaining to the points program but have started reading them.

I am wanting to know if there is any real difference between Legacy and Trust points.

And does it make a difference between the two when it comes to renting or buying the points from others to add to your total?

Legacy points vs Trust points ... frequently debated here on TUG.

This is a good place to start: http://tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168246

A trusted Marriott insider recently told me that Marriott acknowledges it made a mistake by trying to differentiate Legacy points and Trust points as a selling tool. Too confusing (even for Marriott employees) and the tactic also alienated legacy owners (their primary selling base).

Although there will always be a legal distinction between the two, Marriott ~seems~ to have taken steps to eliminate the practical differences as far as getting the reservations you want with either kind of points.

There really is a difference in that Legacy Points do not have direct access to Trust inventory until/unless Marriott makes it available through the DC Exchange Company (which is and has been happening on a regular basis.) Here is a very good thread which completely explains this technical distinction.

As far as renting DC Points, I believe that those who do rent have said that they at least want to know which type of Points they'll be dealing with. Hopefully a few of them will stop by here to let you know their reasoning as well as experience.

Finally, this thread may help you with your decision. Good luck!
