I thought some folks might be interested in knowing that we are getting a ton of snow right now in Lake Tahoe and have been for the past 2 weeks. We should have great ski conditions in the next month or so. Also, temperatures overnight have been staying low. So if you can find any Getaways, it might be worth it. But, of course, always check ski conditions before coming up. Right now, there is so much snow and it is still snowing that we can't get over the Donner overpass. We are looking forward to when it stops snowing so we can hit the slopes after a dry season this year.

50 and 80 are both open but 4WD or chains are required - which you should always have in the Sierra in the winter anyway. The Donner "overpass" on 80 is open.

80 and Donner overpass are "open" but when chains are required and it is snowing or has just finished snowing, we usually do not drive up because the traffic can be horrendous. There have been times when people report 8 hours to get through. We have had to turn around. It is unpredictable. So I definitely recommend checking road conditions thoroughly. However, there should be great skiing when you can finally get up there. We are really looking forward to it!

You know it's Donner Pass - not Donner Overpass - right?

Yes, Donner Pass. I have a house 45 minutes from Donner Pass and have been over it just about 100+ times. We locals say we are driving “over the pass.” I rarely even use the “Donner” part of the name. There is more snow and treacherous driving over the pass than on any other part of I-80 due to the high elevation. I do not drive on the 50 side or visit South Tahoe. We are strictly North Tahoe folks. Thanks for the technical correction. Folks, be careful this weekend as we are getting rain on and off throughout the Bay Area and I-80 has been opening and closing. Be sure to check road conditions and ski conditions before planning a Getaway. Another storm is coming in next week! More snow! Yay! Also Squaw is offering cheap lift tickets.
