We're spending Dec 21st to 28th at Lake Winnipesaukee and I'm looking for ideas on a location for the week before & the week after. We're looking for a place off the beaten path where there will be availability 45 days out. We're thinking anywhere within a day's drive from Lake Winnipesaukee, any Ideas?

Are you looking for more mountains or city? What do you like/want to do on vacation? The week before Christmas should be pretty easy almost anywhere within a day's drive. The week after could be quite difficult.

Dan's questions are apropos, but let me make some suggestions anyway.

Somewhere in the ski areas of Vermont the week before. Somewhere in Coastal Maine the week after. If coastal Maine isn't your thing, perhaps Custom House in Boston. If not that, perhaps the Cape. If you are lucky, a Nor'easter will come along and dump a foot or more of snow on you sometime during your third week here in New England. :D

What's your definition of "a day's drive"? Six hours can get you to Canada, New York or Pennsylvania. Twelve to thirteen hours will get you as far south as Virginia.

For after Christmas, within 45 days notice, you may be able to get to Cape Cod or Rhode Island. Even though it's school vacation week, these are big Christmas break locations (especially Cape Cod).

At least for the week before, consider The Windrifter in Wolfeboro. It's an 1800's Inn with a choice of the Inn or more modern buildings, and a choice of lakefront or golf course view units.

Wolfeboro is a deliciously quiet town in the winter.

As of now there are are plenty of Extra Vacations for December 14, but none for the week after Christmas. You could probably take a chance on waiting for a Last Call for the week of the 14th and still get it. There is always the chance that something would come up for New Years' week, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Good Luck for a holiday in beautiful country.
