We have just been notified of a unit available to us at this resort ...... but the date of check in is May 1. Is the Heavenly ride up the mountain open at this time? We were in Tahoe in October a couple of years ago and to our disappointment it was closed. Also is the weather cold this time of year? Any snow around? What are your thoughts??????? should we keep it or release it? We are senior citizens and my brother has arthritis and has trouble in cold weather. Any help you can give would be appreciated. We have never been to this resort. Did you like it??

According to www.weather.com, the average high temp. for May is 61 degrees. It can snow as late as the end of May in Tahoe (it did two years ago). Mid-June July, August, September would be the warmest time. I think September after Labor Day is a fine time to be in Tahoe - summer crowds are gone & weather is usually gorgeous. Don't know if the tram runs after Labor Day. You would have to check with the Chamber of Commerce (or the resort?) for that info.

The Gondola is open for ski season and then it doesn't open in the spring until Memorial Day weekend - so it won't be open May 1st.

We always go up for Memorial Day Weekend and 2 out of the last 3 years it has snowed that weekend, so snow is certainly possible, although not likely, May 1st. Here's a chart showing the historical averages for Tahoe. For truly warm weather you want to go in August.

The resort is really nice - my daughter was up there in June and they loved it. Here's a link to the TUG Reviews.

Here's a picture I took Memorial Day Weekend:

Hi Denise: Can you help me out here?? I did see you journal on Tahoe and loved it. Also saw your picture of snow during May. BUT... is it normally cold and snowing end of May or is that an exception? Have you stayed at the Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort? How did you like it?

Take a look at the chart I posted - the Avg. low on May 1st is 30º and the Avg. high is in the 50's, so yes - May is usually quite cool in Tahoe. There is also a snowfall chart on the same page that shows that a little snow is common in May - but it's likely to be light and not stay on the ground.

Have you stayed at the Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort? How did you like it?

I have not stayed there - but I toured it and I thought it was quite nice. My daughter stayed there a few weeks ago and really liked it.

The resort is very nice. It has everything you would need except washer-dryer in the unit. Kitchen is small but o.k. The two bedroom unit has a lock-off that is good size. We were at our resort, Tahoe Beach and Ski, the 2nd week in May and it was quite cool at night but not bad in the morning and afternoon.

We own there, as mentioned the units are nice, small kitchen, each floor has at least one laundry room, probably more than one. We went early morning and did not have any problems doing washing and/or drying. Very few parking spots around the resort, they do have valet parking with a parking garage. It is free, except the tip, for owners, not sure about exchangers.

Thank you Denise and everyone for your replys. We were able to make a change to end of May instead of 1st. of May. I'm hoping for warm weather and especially for the Heavenly Gondola to be open. We missed it last trip..it was closed.

Can you suggest a couple of restaurants for us? We did hear that there is a great buffet in Harrah's. Where is it located? Inside the casino? So happy to be going back to Tahoe......it is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Very close second to Hawaii.

The buffet at Harrah's is on the top floor so it has great views.

The Heavenly gondola doesn't open until Memorial Day Weekend which is May 25th next year, and then it will close and reopen for the summer.

You will probably have sunny afternoons, but it may not be shorts weather - plan for both extremes. You will definitely need a coat at night.

I agree with Harrah's buffet. A little pricey, but the awesome views make it worth it. If you're lucky, or go during slow season or off hours, you may get a window seat.

A favorite of ours that may not be your cup of tea is Tep's Villa Roma, which is an Italian restaurant. '70s decor that looks like it's been well worn in the intervening decades, and a salad bar that looks like it's from a coffee shop of the same era. But it's been run by the same Italian family during all that time, and there's no doubt that it's authentic. Good prices, good food. And the minestrone in that throwback salad bar (free with dinner) is wonderful. But the decor...

You may consider the paddle wheel boat ride around the lake. There is one such boat that leaves close to where you will be staying and another in Zephyr cove. The views are spectacular. The food on board is OK. Emerald Bay is amazing.
