We just returned from our 2 week trip to Lagunamar. I describe various aspects of our experience below.
Overall we came back home very satisfied and had a very good vacation (January 2 to 16).

RESORT
The resort is new, only 140 rooms are open right now, out of the total 600+. Half of the resort is under construction, no issues with noise whatsoever (we stayed on both sides of the complex and did not have any problems). Staff are very friendly and most are helpful, they have around 8 concierge staff ready to help you with your reservations and tours. One critical thing I will say is that the magical staff person you always want to see – “Director of Fun” was in hiding for some reason – we have not even heard him, which was quite disappointing. There are two restaurants – Viento bar at the pool and Oceano’s restaurant. They both serve good food and we found that their prices were very reasonable compared with what you would get in La Isla Plaza across the street and quality was better. One very disappointing fact was that both pools were very cold, even on the hottest days. Not many people used the pools as a result.

BEACH
Could be better. There are pieces of construction materials and garbage here and there. Frankly I expected the beach to be a lot nicer. Do not get me wrong, it is still enjoyable, but I just think that a name like Westin could have done more to make the beach nicer, smoother and cleaner.

TRANSPORTATION
You can arrange a shuttle bus to take you to and from airport for a total of $35 for up to 4 people. I do not recommend a car rental, driving there seemed very dangerous and erratic. Getting around in the hotel zone and downtown is very easy by local buses. Very reliable and frequent, they only cost 6.50 pesos per person (50 cents). Be very careful when you cross the street in front of the resort – there are no traffic lights or pedestrian crossings even though crowds of people cross this heavy traffic road every 3 minutes. You try to find a gap between cars and just hope you will make it, this was totally wild.

MONEY
One dollar is around 13 pesos. I was pleased to find that the resort offered a very competitive exchange rate – even better than the exchange kiosks on the street. Paying in local currency is always better, since you will almost certainly overpay if you pay in dollars.

RESTAURANTS
The concierge has a recommended list. If you want to go to a restaurant, ask the concierge to book it for you, and you will get a free drink at the restaurant. We have been to a few and I must say, we did not find one we would go back to. Everyone has their own preferences of course, but I though I would leave some comments about the ones we went to. After all trial and error we finally settled on the resort’s restaurant Oceano’s – the food and pricing were best.

  • La Destilleria. Mexican food. 10 minutes walk or 1 bus stop from the resort. This one was not bad, although nothing special.
  • "Thai Lounge" in La Isla Plaza across the street. I have never dined in a thai restaurant this expensive ($90 for a family with one child). There is really nothing special about this place, other than the palapas where you sit, very romantic, but WAYYYYYY overpriced. I would say food is average. Beware that they include their tip on the bill. The first time I did not realize it as I thought this was some kind of tax, and of course they won’t tell you unless you ask. The place is totally not worth it.
  • Casa Maguey. Really bad experience with this one – I had a food poisoning there. It looks very attractive and authentic Mexican but we thought the food was below average.
  • La Madonna. a so-so Italian restaurant in La Isla Plaza across the street. The décor is very good though.

FOOD
Apparently the best groceries store in town is Walmart. We could find anything close to Whole Foods unfortunately.

AT AIRPORT
You may be approached by a representative from Cancun Palace hotel with an offer you should not refuse. They will ask for $100 security deposit which you will get back when you go to meet with them. I have never seen an incentive package this rich. I do not work for them and it makes no difference to me whether you go there or not, but I think you should consider it – for a 90 min time commitment you get a lot of value.

Thanks for posting.

I thought Westin was installing heaters for the pool.

Did you do any excursions?

What was the occupancy level of the resort?

Did you do an owners update?

They are talking about heaters, but nothing has been done yet. The pools are freezing cold. On a very hot day pools are usable.

Yes, we went to three: the Chichen Itza, the Jungle Tour and the Wet & Wild. I would recommend the first two, although the Chichen Itza tour takes all day (three hours one way), you should go only if you love history that much :). The Jungle tour was a lot of fun -- they put you in a two seater boat (a child can ride with you too), you cruise the sea and the little gulf (full of crocs, beware !!) and then spend 40 minutes snorkelling.

The occupancy level was low, because only part of the resort is open (140 rooms out of 600). But we found out that demand was high and that the Westin Resort & Spa (hotel on the other end of the hotel zone) was full and it has 1000+ rooms.

No we did not do an owners update, since we did one within the last six months.

Does this sound a little fishy to anyone else? A $100 deposit that you get back?

And what about some specifics on the "goods" that make this such a good "value"?

Based on a number of postings here on TUG concerning TS purchases in Mexico, going to a presentation is not recommended for the novice or weak-hearted, IMO. Others..... agree or not?

Actually, I have to agree that if you are going to sit thru a timeshare presentation, the Palace Resorts one is the one to do. My husband and I did it 2 trips in a row. Yes, the presentation is high pressure, but if you understand this going in, and stay firm, (DO NOT BUY!!) it actually won't be an unpleasant experience. You'll also get a free awesome breakfast. In return, you will get to go on great excursions. What you do, is after the presentation, you schedule your excursions at their travel desk. You wind up joining Palace Resorts guests on their trips. And you get food and alcohol included :D (our second time, we didn't want to do the same excursions, so we were able to do the Dolphin Swim at Parque Nizuc instead) As far as the $100 deposit, yes, you do get it back. So I can certainly recommend this presentation for what you get for it.

Yes, it sounded fishy to me, but I've yet to attend a timeshare presentation and don't ever intend to attend one. So it's an offer I can, and will, refuse. When I'm on vacation, the last thing I'm going to do is waste some salesman's time, let alone my precious time.

I understand the scepticism, but here is what we got: three excursions for three people (valued $150-$250 each) plus full day of meals at Cancun Palace, the total value was at least $700. The deal they were offering was an incredibly dumb idea -- buying a privilege to be able to pay wholesale price for a gazillion weeks (we were offered 80) at their Cancun resorts in the future. I don't know who would go back to the same hotel in Cancun for the rest of their life, but believe it or not, some people were buying. Since I personally do not like "all inclusive" and would never consider going back to the same place every year for the rest of my life, I said NO and that was the end of it. They were actually quite easy on us, when they saw that we were not interested at all (even though we did not know what we were getting into when we paid $100 deposit to their rep at airport). It is true that $100 deposit was returned to us when we got there and they even paid for a taxi.

You do not have to believe me, but I wanted to share this with the group because I personally have never seen a deal like this before.

My term "fishy" was not related to the fact that I did not believe you about the deal you received, but more that they wanted $100 upfront -- to be returned later. I see it was legit, but I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have tried it.

You seemed to be well prepared for the sales pitch. Others, unfortunately, were not so strong willed...

You may have seen my report from December on these restaurants. We liked La Destilleria, but I wasn't that impressed over all (it's a chain restaurant, by the way). On the other hand, we thought La Madonna was fantastic. The staff was excellent and the food superb. Perhaps you were there on an off night - that was one of the only restaurants I'd go back to in an instant.

As I mentioned in an earlier thread, we were at WLR in November and we actually cancelled our stay January 4-18 largely due to the pool heaters.

We were in Cancun in June and again in November and both times we ate at the Captain's Cove. It is associated with the Royal Resorts and they don't take Amex, but other than that it is a the best we have found in Cancun for steak and fish. The patio seating by the water with the gators is neat, the food is very good, and the service is GREAT! The bus ride from WLR to Captain's Cove is about 5-6 stops towards the airport.
