We booked Ko Olina for next October, and in order to save DP and get 2 weeks, did a one bedroom, mountain penthouse. Have no idea what the penthouse thing is, but was told it has vaulted ceilings and not necessarily high floor, but could begin on 6'th in on Hale building and 9'th in Moana. Does anyone have information on the penthouse, mountain views? It appears the points are the same as the standard mountain one bedroom so not sure if this choice will limit our location or is a good thing??

Good question. I would think that Penthouse would automatically imply the top floor, so I am interested in seeing responses to this.

At Ko Olina, "penthouse" means nobody will be above you. It also means a higher ceiling, with clearstory windows. The floor plans and furnishings are the same as on the other floors.

If you look at photos of the towers at Ko Olina, you'll see that the ends of the buildings stair-step down to some degree. That's why some penthouse units are on floors that are lower than the top floors of the buildings.

With a Mauka View (island/mountain/inland), the huge advantage of a penthouse is that the parking structures will be so far below you that you won't see one unless you make point of looking down from your lanai. With lower Mauka View units, the top parking level of a parking structure can dominate your view.

Enjoy Ko Olina! It's a wonderful resort. Aloha!

The penthouse is a good thing. It does "limit" your location, which means you can't get a bad view. I would take that kind of limiting factor any day.

It can start on the 6th floor of the hale kona building. If you get a unit on the 6th mountain view you are at the end of the parking structure below you. The parking level is 4 levels below you. Penthouse means no one above you but does not necessarily mean the top floor of the building.
Yes the units are a little warmer because of the higher ceilings. I like them because you only have a neighbor to one side and no one above you.

The penthouse has an extra row of windows near the ceiling without any curtains, so the room gets bright early in the morning, especially if it is a mountain view room facing east. This probably added a day for me to adjust to jet lag.

That's the only (minor) con I can think of - it's a beautiful resort!

I like them but if you like to take an afternoon nap (as I do), you can't get the rooms dark because of high windows in the vaulted ceilings. There is no way to pull a curtain or drape across the windows. Otherwise, they are very nice.
