We are making our first trip back to MKO next summer in a 1 BD MV unit. Any suggestions in terms of possible water views?

Thanks !

I traded in to MKO last year with a mountain view designation.

Upon checkin, the view was confirmed as mountain view, however the front desk clerk offered us a 5th floor handicapped unit in Kona that overlooked the Lagoon pool and had a slice of an ocean view. Worked for us!

Winger,

You should request Hale Kona building, pool side, highest floor possible. They are terrific.

Best,

Greg

I agree, but Kona is a smaller building and is centrally located. As a result, an exchanger is not likely to get it. Request Kona, but be prepared to be placed in Moana, which has good mountain views from the higher floors (but no water views except in the ocean view category).

More often than not you will get Moana tower. We are owners and used our lock off for the 1BR. Our location was Mountain view but we actually had a view of the ocean and Aulani from the balcony. Moana is actually a good location as there are two sets of BBQ's - one in front and one in between Moana and Kona.

Had a great time - they have added 70 more umbrellas around the pools for shade and ALL of the activities were free. We did our second week at Marriott Kauai Beach Club - had a primo ocean view. There were only about 8 umbrellas that were not assigned to the restaurants so there was very little shade. most of their activities were $15 so a very big difference from MKO

We are MV PH owners. Get a high floor in Moana and you will have views of the ocean in the distance. Either towards Aulani or towards Diamond Head which is visible in the distance. The high floor is essential.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. After careful consideration with DW, we will ask for high floor Kona pool view as first choice, then Moana high floor as second choice. If we end up with Moana, that would work great as that was the same building from our original trip, thus has some special meaning for us, sort of like going home again after a long trip away! Moana having multiple grills also works better b/c we normally cook in at least one meal per day, and having a functional grill is an essential part of the formula.

Wouldn't kona tower pool view be considered ocean view?

If I recall correctly, there a a few MV's (not many) due to the way the building is configured/angled ....

Yes, Winger is correct -- please see the attached site map. I don't know why there are a couple MVs on the Pool Side, but they have great views. I hope you can get one of them!

Best,

Greg

Request Kona for sure. As a mountain view owner at MKO when I have stayed and requested Kona I have received high floor and then one of the first two villa's on the right hand side of the left hall as you exit the elevator. Basically these are ocean view. But, technically you can't see the ocean from the door threshold so they classified as mountain. View was awesome though when sitting on the lanai with coffee.

Greg. The criteria Ko Olina used when they categorized was basically if you are standing at the threshold of the entrance to the unit could you see ocean. If yes. Ocean view. If no mountain view. The first two villas on that pool side of Kona you can't. At least that is what I was told. Never tested. So they put them in mountain view. Great score as an owner. If you book 2BR try to book lock off capable. If you book dedicated you will get Nai and iraqi view. That blows.

If you get Mountain in Moana (lock off capable 2BR) at least it is the golf course and not the industrial garbage. BUT Kona is your best bet. If you own Marriott you may get lucky in Kona with those first two villas.

Good Luck

Keep in mind that the best mountain/island view villas are likely to go to multi-week Ko Olina owners of that category, especially those who booked 13 months out.

Before Hale Nai'a was built, there were a couple of "stacks" of mountain/island view villas in Hale Kona that had decent views of the marina, industrial harbor, and the ocean. In fact, other villas on the same side (but closer to the ocean) were (and still are) officially ocean view villas (although not as desirable as ocean view villas and the other side of the building).

There are probably now similar villas in Hale Nai'a that will have such a view until the fourth building goes up. But I don't know this for a fact.

Honestly, unless you have a high priority in the room assignment process, I would recommend trying for the best mountain/island view instead of asking for a particular building in hopes that you MIGHT get a glimpse of the ocean.

My opinion is that the best mountain/island view villas are those on the higher floors. They offer a nice view of the golf course and the mountains. But mountain/island view villas on low floors are would often be right above the parking structures, with a view of parked cars on the top level.

We got a 2bdrm PH mountain view room in Naia (via DC points) with the views that Werner described. (Our room was not a lock off - I don't know if this applies to the other rooms in the building.)
