I just read in the paper 4 Koreans were kidnapped in Mexico and held for $30,000.00 ransom. Who would ever want to go to Mexico and take a chance.

This is some increased violence in Mexican border towns according to
this
travel alert.
But, as we've discussed on TUG many times before,
violence can happen anywhere--even in one's own neighborhood. So,
just be cautious wherever you are.

We're still going to Cabo and we're looking forward to it.

Who would ever want to go to Mexico and take a chance.

We would! We would! :cheer: :cheer: We love going to Mexico so much that we have just bought a vacation/retirement villa on the beach!

Crime's no more an issue in Mexico than it is in some areas of the U.S. and Canada. You just need to use good common sense no matter where you are.

¡Que bueno! The more people that take your attitude, the easier it gets to exchange into MX.

As with most locales in the world, there are safe places and places that are less safe. For example, consider the similar concerns and panics among German tourists about vacationing in Orlando because of perceptions of being preyed upon by criminal elements in that part of the US.

to the extent you and other choose to build stereotypes about all of Mexico based upon incidents in one portion of Mexico, that improves the opportunities for those who have a more nuanced understanding of issues and situations.

Geez e.bram-
Ya think bad stuff doesn't happen in the good ole' US of A? Why ever go out of your house then??? Geesh

Shades of Natalie Holloway

I feel more safe walking around Aruba than I do in the local Mall. There are dangerous people everywhere. We have had four wonderful vacations in Mexico since we started timesharing in 2001. The last was May 2008 at the Grand Mayan Riviera Maya. However, we were kidnapped by the sales reps for several hours.

I have felt incredibly much safer on my 2 trips to Mexico than I have lately in my travels to -
Washington, DC,
Virginia Beach or Norfolk,
Philadelphia or Pittsburgh
NYC or Long Island
Ocean City or Salisbury, MD
Dover or Wilmington, Del,
or anywhere else :)

I fully agree with Steve Nelson since I love Mexico and all who are fearfull should stop going so the rest of us can continue going on great vacations to Cancun, Pourto Vallarta, Cabo, Acapulco just to name a few of the wonderfull vacation destinations I have been to in Mexico. I have never felt safer on these Mexico vacations as well as my favorite spot Aruba.

Hey come to think of it as someone else posted based on the tragic Natalee Hollaway case please don't go to Aruba especially during the winter so I can get my pick of the best weeks and timeshares on one of the safest places on earth.

Be carefull wherever you are since no place on earth is totaly free of crime.

ME! I take that chance whenever I can! :cheer: :cheer:

(But not to the border towns!)

I absolutely love Mexico! Esp Acapulco!!!

I'm not Korean so no worries here :D

I think there may be a lot more to this story than it would first appear. First of all, these were not tourists, according to the AP, they were in the country, trying to cross into the US illegally! Their kidnappers were the people smugglers who were supposed to get them across the border! So they put themselves in danger and get no sympathy from me!

By the way, they have been released and are safe and were not mis-treated.

Yeah...I read about a murder in the States once...who would ever want to go to the U.S. and take a chance? :p

Similarly why would any prudent person ever choose to visit southern California, given all of the gang activities, road rage shootings, freeway serial killers. Then there are the earthquakes and wildfires. Oh, and let's not forge the air pollution.

Just not a very safe place. Certainly only the foolhardy would ever go there and expose themselves and their loved ones to all of those dangers.

Methinks e.bram just posted this to "stir the pot".:D I note that he has not returned to respond to any of the positive and very logical responses.

So what is it e.bram? Just bored yesterday evening and thought you might as well post an isolated piece of news without any contextual information and see what fell out? :D

Let alone live there!

I'll be leaving that state and travleing to Mexico for the second time this year in November. Obviously, I am out of my mind!

That's right Steve...

Now if we only get about half of the folks who live here to move to Bellevue...
this would be paradise! :D

And I still live in Mexico well over half the year--only 30 miles south of the border. Makes it a lot easier to get good tables by the ocean when we don't have all those pesky tourists spending money.

I heard from a local taxi cab driver that the border towns are more dangerous today because of several drug cartels fighting with each other and you can be in the way of one of these fights. You happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

We feel very safe in Puerto and Nuevo Vallarta and hope it will stay that way. The local people can't be nicer than they are. They have invited us in their home many times and we are almost strangers but they treat you as a friend and always say "Mi casa es su casa" and they mean it.

I was recently in Mexico at our timeshare and broke three ribs plus my sternum and a toe. I had several offers to stay with local people until I felt better. I was really touched.

Yes, drug cartels are warring in Tijuana and Juarez. However, despite what the taxi driver said, you, as a tourist, are highly unlikely to be in a spot where they are. You won't be going into residential areas or back alleys. The problem isn't in the tourist areas or on the toll road, etc.

Well I might be careful if were travelling alone and going off the beaten track in Mexico - but I would exercise the same care anywhere.

I have never felt unsafe in the Puerto Vallarta area, which is the only area I have visited.

To be honest, I felt a lot more uneasy when myself and my partner took a wrong turning in Orlando and we got lost temporarily. At that time, there had been incidences of Brits being shot in car parks etc. However, I still love Florida and would never stop going there (finances permitting!)
