Is it even remotely possible to get an exchange through RCI into Key West? Seems inventory is small and I have seen very little availability. And when I have seen inventory it is very short notice. I have not tried ongoing search yet.

I got a match to The Galleon Resort with an ongoing search. It matched in March for an early December week, with an ongoing search that was about 7 months old. Unfortunately, it was too close to another trip and I had to let it go.
So, seems possible if you're flexible about when you go.

I got an exchange into a 2 bedroom last July 2014 for DH's birthday and our 30th anniversary. It was just sitting online so I grabbed it about 3 months out. I did not do an ongoing search. We had a view of the marina.

I suspect that it might be easier to exchange into Coconut Mallory in Key West, but I wouldn't actually recommend ever doing so. It's barely in Key West at all, being just over the little bridge from Stock Island and a good 4+ miles away from Old Town and Mallory Square. We used to own a week there --- very happy to do so no longer.
Then again, CM may not be even affiliated with RCI anyhow, as the OP clearly specified as the exchange company. When we owned there, CM was only affiliated with II. On site sales weasels regularly claimed that RCI affiliation was "coming very soon", but you know what they say about sales weasels' lips moving...

I just got back from Key West, but I did not use a TS. I stayed at La Concha (affiliated with IHG) and found it perfect for our needs. It is on Duval Street between Margaritaville and the Hard Rock. Ernest Hemmingway's house is only about 6 blocks away. I used points so it was basically a freebe. The room was small but the location was very good.
