We will be arriving in Fort Lauderdale 4 days early for a cruise in October and plan to spend 3 of those days in Key West.

Sombrero Inn in Marathon has a really good price per night. We thought we might stay there for all 3 nights and drive both directions during the day to have a look around.

Any comments or suggestions??

We stayed for 2 nites in May 2008 at Eden House. Very inexpensive. We had a single room and shared the bathroom with our son and his girlfriend and is was only $110./per night (which is hard to get in Key West) They had a lovely pool, and hot tub plus free happy hour on sat. Very friendly and near everything...we rented their bikes and biked all around key west.

HI Chicklet:

Who did you book Eden House through?

I have gone online looking at Eden House and I get messages like 'there are no rooms available for those nights' or 'you must book for longer than 4 nights at a time'.

Did you stay longer?

How big is Key West? It sounds like its easily tourable by bike?? Or car?

Do you know what the distance is from Key Largo to the tip in either miles or hours?

Try the Ambrosia House B & B www.ambrosiakeywest.com
Our DD worked there before she moved in with us. She said it was very nice and the prices are good. And they offer a great breakfast. :whoopie: Variety of rooms available. Close to everything. NO, we don't get anything from them, just another place to check out.

Re: >> How big is Key West? It sounds like its easily tourable by bike?? Or car? <<

Approximately four miles long by less than two miles wide.
Navigable by bicycle, but riding at night can be a bit sketchy, even though rental bikes come equipped with tiny flashing LED lights, front and rear.

Driving and/or parking a car can be challenging around "downtown", not to mention not being able to truly experience the "atmosphere" or the people from inside an automobile. Keep in mind that many (non-timeshare) lodging facilities do not have off-street parking! Additionally, on side streets marked as "residential", you cannot park at all (for locals only) and the ticketing is very energetic, both day and night.

Re: >> Do you know what the distance is from Key Largo to the tip in either miles or hours? <<

Exactly 105 miles from one particular resort I know in Key Largo to the southernmost point "land-buoy" in Key West. Driving time is much less predictable, however, since any wreck on U.S. Route 1 along the way brings things to a temporary standstill in very short order.

Another place to stay in Key West, that we found pretty good, is Marrero's B&B. The location is excellent and they have off-street parking (for a fee). The breakfast was good, and every day from about 5:00 to 7:00 pm they have a "Happy-Hour" with free drinks. They also have a small pool, but there is so much to do in Key West that you will not likely use the pool.

Eden House is where Goldie Hawn filmed "Criss Cross"

Eden House isn't the nicest digs in KW, but it is where Goldie Hawn was filmed in the 1980's movie "Criss Cross". However, the movie doesn't do justice to the hotel's casual atmosphere and good service- so I wouldn't rush out to rent the video and judge the hotel by the movie. I think it'd make a fine choice for a 3 night base in a visit to the lower Keys.

Depending on the dates, you might want to check eBay since there has been some recent rentals listed there for the Hyatts in Key West.

The Southernmost Hotel which is right at the end of Duval by the famous "Southernmost point buoy marker" is offering $79 per night rates. I cannot speak for the rooms, but the common areas within the home and the pool area are very nice.

Southernmost Hotel

I have stayed there 4 or 5 times but that was over 8 years ago, however it was clean and taken care of. May I suggest Key Lime Inn or one of there Hotels that are connected to them. I have stayed at Key Lime twice and was very pleased with their Queen room.

Stayed there a few years ago and liked it. Check the Galleon. They also rent out rooms (efficiences) by the night. My friends rented a hotel room but were given a two bedroom upon check-in.
