Kenmore freezer

Have any TUGers owned a Kenmore freezer? I just bought a chest model for delivery later in the week.

Our old one is about 20 years old and I didn't want to get a beef fixed this year until I had a new one. The way things go, the old one might prove more reliable than the new one, but you never know.

We lost one freezer full of food earlier this year. What a mess! So sad to throw out all that money (I mean food).

I owned a Kenmore freezer for several years. Not sure if you knew, but they're made for Sears by Whirlpool. Pretty reliable - never had any issues with it. When we upgraded to a larger unit, I gave it to my son. He used it for quite a long time, too. It's probably still running, wherever it is now.

We went in to purchase a six cu.ft. chest freezer that was on sale from Sears When it didn't come in, they gave us a 9 cu.ft. upright to replace it. That was in the late 70's and it is still going strong.

We have one that is about 15 years old. Never had any problems with it.

We bought an upright Kenmore freezer this year and actually got it at Kmart, which now sells Kenmore appliances. It was a floor model that had a hefty discount that beat the price Sears was selling the model for at the time. We've been very satisfed with it so far.

You might want to check your homeowner's insurance to see if there's coverage for the spoiled food if it was more than your deductible - if there was a storm or power outage it should be covered, and maybe for other reasons as well. We got our freezer contents covered b/c of power loss during a big storm, and we did not need receipts, just an estimate was enough.

Thanks for the suggestion on the freezer. My mother went through that once on a food claim when workers accidentally unplugged her freezer. She spent weeks getting the info together and in the end, gave the insurance payment to the people at the grocery store who had helped her with the claim. It was quite a hassle, but then she was insured with my least favorite company, State Farm. My daughter (the law school student) just called me today to read to me from a case file about how reprehensible the courts had deemed this company to be in some of their actions.

Our freezer just died from old age. We bought it used probably 20 years ago. It was housed in my parents' house. They have been deceased for some time and the insurance we have doesn't cover the contents since it is vacant. We just use it for storage because we haven't had the energy to get the wiring redone and all the other work that would be required if we rented it. It makes a lovely storage shed.

DH is grumbling about cleaning out the basement, since I want the new one in OUR house. At least then someone would look in it every day or so.

Have had 2 Kenmore Fridge/Freezers

and both are still going strong. We have one for over flow from the kitchen. It is about 7 years old. The main fridge in the kitchen is about 5 years old. Both have had no problems other than minor cosmetic type problems- knock on wood.

That said I spoke with a guy who repairs these type of things and he said the older ones were better built than the current ones. The older ones were built to last whereas newer ones are more of a "disposable" commodity. I guess that's true of everything nowadays.
