So my parents (in their 70s) want to go to Kauai next summer and take my wife and I and our daughters (18 and 22). Obviously HGVC has no presence there, but we’d love to find something of similar level/quality (we adore Kings’ Land). Any firsthand recommendations? We’d need units with air conditioning for my grumpy old man, and they’ve ruled out the Poipu/Koloa area already for lodging.

Thanks in advance

Your choices are going to be limited. If Koloa and Poipu are out, then about all that's there would be the Marriott in Lihue, or something up in the Princeville area. Not sure about a/c in the Princeville area, because not all units there have it.

you can try RCI or possibly rent points from a Wyndham or Worldmark owner since they have a resort in Kauai. Worldmark credits normally rent for 7 cents a point. attached is the Worldmark Kauai points chart.

The WorldMark on Kauai is not anything like King's Land, the OP's resort of reference. It's more like an urban motel. Definitely not in the same category.

We love the Westin in Princeville -- you would have to rent a unit because it trades in II, but I understand that the rental cost isn't much higher than MFs. It's a great property and we prefer to to Marriott Kauai Lagoons and Marriott Kauai Beach Club. We've not stayed at Waiohai.

I hope you are able to go and you will enjoy it!

Best,

Greg

It’s too bad they have ruled out the Poipu area as the Marriott’s Waiohai is a very nice resort with a swimmable beach right in front of it. I echo Greg’s comments about The Westin Princeville Resort. It is a very nice resort with nice pools. One downside is it’s up on a cliff, so you have to drive to a beach. That said there are several nice beaches on that side of the island. These two resorts are on par with HGVC Kings Land. We have looked at several others on the island and don’t think any of them compare in quality.

Best regards.

Aloha,
I can think of many recommendations that are not timeshares. In some cases, our firsthand knowledge is based on visiting friends in their rented condo. Are you limiting yourself to an exchange?
Given the age and likely interest range, I suggest you focus on the east coast of Kauai (between Lihue and Kapaa).

The Westin in Princevlle and Hanalei Bay Resort are both in Princeville and very nice. I have seen both in II, and HBV is also available through RCI and Grand Pacific Exchange (GPX).
