I am wondering why car rentals are so high.
Planning to be on Kauai in November for Thanksgiving (9 days maybe more).
All the sites I have tried for car rental prices start at $50/day (w/taxes) and go up from there.

I know that they have hundreds of cars sitting idle on every island and every brand.
That doesn't make sense that they are not more competitive given the lack of visitors.

Reserve your car then register it with Auto Slash. They will notify you when they find a cheaper rate.

Don't feel too bad. Car rentals on St Thomas and St John are $80 per day or more.
I don't have recent experience of Kauai, but I have saved much on Maui by renting off-airport...with about a $10 or $12 taxi ride to get there. Hertz and Enterprise have both worked well in the past for this, when booked through Costco. The catch is that off-airport rental offices typically close by 5 pm and may not be open on Sundays.

I am wondering why car rentals [on Kauai] are so high...for Thanksgiving...
Not that it helps, but I can tell you that it isn't just Thanksgiving - summer 2021 prices are more than doubled over 'normal' summer prices. So I made my reservations hoping and expecting to get new ones. As @Luanne and @bobpark56 suggested, look to autoslash and costco.
