This last week, I had an ocean front rental at our Kauai Beach Villas timeshare that didn't rent, so it was going to stand empty.

Five days before check-in, I asked my DD if she wanted to go to Kauai (I was really just kidding.) She said that the school where she teaches was closed for the week, and she wanted to go!

So I booked flights, and we went with 5 days notice!

We have been to Hawaii many times in June and July, but as a teacher, I was never able to go in the winter, so this was my first trip in February. We had fabulous, dry, warm weather, and had a fantastic time! I also got to see the whales for the first time - it was great!

It's strange how things work out sometimes isn't it. Sounds like a great trip and
You got to see whales to boot.

Awesome! Have a great time with your daughter. :D

That's great! Spontaneous trips can be so fun!

Glad you and your daughter could use it and have a great time.

Now that we are retired - technically transition of our ex-business ends Feb 29, we will be paying attention to some of the last minute rentals. I saw an earlier listing of yours in Dec and we were really tempted to extend our Hawaii trip but could not due to work.

Wow, that sounds great to be so spontaneous! Glad you got to see the whales!

What a wonderful trip! Glad you did it.

Good for you! Just wonder how expensive the airline tickets were bought five days before departure?

Sounds like a great trip!

We did something similar a couple of years ago. Decided on a Wednesday we'd go towards the end of January, and the following Saturday or Sunday we were on a plane to Maui. We even got tickets with frequent flyer miles. These short notice trips are great. No long discussions or preparations. Just go and have fun!

If you liked the whales, you should try Maui next time. The area between Maui, Lanai and Molokai is just teeming with them. You can even hear their songs while snorkeling over the reef in front of WKORV if you are quiet and listen for them.

Did something similar in January ... fed up with crap and looking at an unit for the next day going empty. Decided to look at HOW EXPENSIVE SWA fares would be for a last minute trip to Ft Lauderdale... to console myself with "it is the airfare cost keeping people home."

RT fare was $205... said, to myself ... "I am SO OUT of here."

Great few days ... floated in the heated pool. Drank a few beers. Tortured 2 guys from Scotland/Denmark as they brought me beer after beer ... they might have missed their flights home.:hysterical:

In other words, I needed a break and it was a fine time.

And I typed this as I have to go out in 35 minutes into the 11 degree weather and check for frozen pipes ...

Florida ... Ft Lauderdale ...

To answer a couple of questions:

I used award miles for the tickets.

We went to Kauai because I already had an unrented reservation there.

Welcome home! I wondered where you'd gotten off to. I'm glad that week wasn't wasted. And nice that you and DD could have time away together.

Where did you see whales from?

I'm marking the days till my October trip. I'll be seeing the same view you had, more or less. Fun times!

Dave

One of the great things about retirement. Spontaneous trips in winter to chase the sun. See a whale. Connect with a loved one. Attitude adjustment par excallance.

Wishing you many more unexpected vacancies.

Jim

Whales are the main reason to go to Hawaii during winter, so it's great you got to see them, finally.

Spontaneous trips can be a lot of fun!

But who mixed the fruity drinks in the blender, with your hubby not there?

We saw whales from our lanai and also went on a 2 hour Holoholo cruise out of Port Allen.

Someone asked how we got last minute award seats:

I had to cobble it together and fly out of one airport and into another, and use 3 different airlines.

We flew to Kauai on American, then we flew back to Oahu on Hawaiian, then we flew back to the mainland on Alaska.

I could have booked round-trip, but the best flights were gone and the available flights were red eyes or had long layovers. By doing it this way, I had better times, and no long layovers.
