"Shiver me timbers!"

I did tell this one at work. I work with Mexicans but not any pirates. But it did go over well with American, Mexican, Cuban, Korean, and Filipino co-workers. No one mentioned that I might have frontal lobe dementia, but maybe they were just being nice. Because we are friends.

Heath, isn't "Shiver me timbers" insulting to those who don't speak with proper grammar? Oughtn't it be "my timber is shivering"?

And more seriously, well slightly anyway, it's an English (or American English?) expression; would (or did) those who are not native English speakers get the joke?

I think, thanks to Capt. Jack Sparrow, "Pirate" has become the universal language!

BTW - we saw a cute impersonator of Capt. Sparrow on the Las Vegas strip last week posing for pictures with tourists, and he was quite the ladies man.

For the same reason, you will no longer find Capt. Sparrow walking around Disneyland - he was a bit "too" popular - nudge, nudge, wink, wink...

Recent picture of Jack Sparrow impersonator on Hollywood Blvd, with my wife and granddaughter. This guy was a real kick!

Confessions of a Disneyland ex-Jack Sparrow, from Los Angeles Magazine. Warning - this is the more explicit version of Denise's comment above.

What did the pirate say when he got his peg leg caught in the refrigerator?

Peg leg? Now that could be offensive to someone with a prosthetic leg!

My dad's nick name at work many years ago was peg leg.

He was no pirate, but he did have a prosthetic leg.

When people would ask, as they sometimes did, "Does your wooden leg ever bother you?" (yes they were wooden in those days) his reply would always be, "only in the fall, when the squirrels climb up looking for nuts. :ignore:

Good one, Laura. Perhaps a very very tiny bit risqué.....but one could always say his leg was made out of walnut or some other nut-producing tree.

Thanks, but I didn't make that one up. He really did say that to people when they asked him.
