I have been reading one of his books, The Virtues of Aging, which he wrote in 1998. My sister gave it to me. It's a quick and easy read. Love this man for his remarkable faith and his involvement in Habitat for Humanity.
An interesting excerpt from his book:
"My dad died when he was fifty-nine, my oldest sister at sixty-four, my youngest sister when she was fifty-four, and my brother when he was fifty-one. All of them enjoyed cigarettes and all of them died of pancreatic cancer."
He wasn't saying they died of pancreatic cancer because of the cigarettes, but maybe that had something to do with their early deaths. He believed his family had a pre-disposition for pancreatic cancer because 1 in 1,000 deaths are due to pancreatic cancer.
The VAST majority of Americans never have known a time without a Jimmy Carter. He was a shining example of humanity and care for the less privileged. His legacy will live on. Go Home Mr. Carter, and Rest in Peace. You did good.
When I was in the Navy in Washington DC, I had the privilege of driving a vehicle in Jimmy Carter's inaugural parade. I met his son Chip a few days before the inauguration, when he visited the motor pool facility to thank us for working so hard for his dad. The entire family always impressed me as being quietly strong and with a solid belief system (except maybe for Brother Billy.) Jimmy was a man of good character, and he led a life very well lived.
President Carter is the only president I ever “met“. He was doing a book signing so I got to say hello, thank him and get the autograph of a president. He is, arguably, the best person to ever hold the office. May he rest in peace.
Back in the '80s, I was hauling an exhibit to Florida for Parker Bros Toys, and had some extra time, so I took the back roads across Georgia. There were repeated signs for a BBQ joint in Plains. So I stopped the big truck under the water tower on the town square. Soon a black Ford Galaxy came in and a couple of guys went in to get the lunch order for the Carter family and crew. It may have been a common occurrence there, but it felt a little like a brush with greatness.
It cost me an over length ticket, but was worth it.

My stepsister, Colleen, knew Jimmy Carter personally because her house bordered his niece's house, and he would come to the fence and visit with her while she tended her garden. She said it was a flurry of excitement at the house when President Carter visited. He was very kind.
I got to meet Jimmy Carter three times, each of them at Habitat for Humanity Jimmy Carter Work Projects. Each work project featured a group photo of Jimmy and Rosalyn with our house-building team (and the other teams as well). At one of them, I happened to be in the front row of our group, and Mrs. Carter turned and spoke to me personally, in appreciation for our volunteer effort. I treasure that memory.
I have been reading The NY Times articles. He was quite blunt in his remarks about the presidents that followed him, from both parties, and I can’t say he was incorrect in his assessment.
above all, he wanted peace.
Jimmy Carter is on my list of people I admire the most
He was an advocate for Viet Nam Veterans in the 70's
He was very involved in trying to help Viet Nam Veterans get care and treatment with Veterans Administration
The only things I remember about Jimmy Carter was his tough times as President and Habitat for Humanity. Jimmy supposedly sent our group of contractors a thank you letter for building a bunch of habitat for humanity homes in the 90s . It was nice to know our work was appreciated as no one else ever said thanks. As most of you know , I don't like politicians , but Jimmy was ok in my book.
He also was for clean energy.
he installed solar panels on the White House but the next president tore them down. The next president to try to do something about it is leaving office. But imagine if those ideas took hold in the late 70s
He and Rosalyn were on the Caribbean cruise we took some 20 years ago.
My son said he was in the ship's fitness center every day, he was "jogging with Jimmy".
A very long time ago, on my way to somewhere else,
I spent some time in Plains, GA. My thought: Hicksville.
But somehow it produced a person incredibly gifted,
well-meaning and generous. Truly remarkable.
Watched on CBS. It was very moving Ceremony. I did get upset at the CBS News Commentators feeling the need to give a running Commentary actually making it hard to hear some of the songs. Thus was not a tennis match.
I was delighted that the coverage that CBS provided since President Carter's death was so extensive. I'm happy to have experienced it without the need to going to Washington D.C. and freezing in that bitter cold!
It was also nice to see all the living Vice Presidents and Presidents gather under one roof. I actually had trouble recognizing Dan Quayle since he disappeared from the public eye for the last 32 years or so.
History will show Jimmy Carter as a President who had many accomplishments both in and out of office.
I had to hunt for the funeral. Only CNN was visible in SoCal because of fire coverage on all the local channels. Even FOX was doing fire and not funeral when I checked. Didn’t think of checking MSNBC yesterday. I imagine if I were a former president or First Lady I’d be looking around thinking “some day this will be me!” Me being me I’d be looking for what I’d want done differently or what I’d want copied at my funeral. I imagine there must be protocols, but I’d make my “desirements” known.
