JetBlue seats wider in revamped cabin, but with less legroom

“JetBlue has unveiled the second phase of its redesigned Airbus A320 cabin.

The airline says the revamped interior features [t]he widest seats available on A320 aircraft as well as enhancements to seatback entertainment screens.

The phase one rollout came last year. Both remodeled cabins have 162 seats, up from 150. To fit more seats, the space between rows has been reduced from 34 to 32 inches. The cabins feature high-definition television and seats equipped with power outlets and USB ports.

JetBlue will configure roughly 20 of its 130 A320s in the phase one style, with the remainder getting the phase two interior, spokesman Philip Stewart said.

The phase two interior features a number of enhancements that go beyond the phase one aircraft. The new seats, manufactured by avionics company Collins Aerospace, measure an expanded 18-plus inches in width. They also have JetBlue's first adjustable headrests and a 10.1-inch high-definition screen featuring more than 100 television channels as well as an expanded collection of movies and video games. Other features of the system include the ability to pause live TV and a picture-in-picture option.

In another enhancement, the phase two restyled interiors are equipped with ViaSat-2 WiFi, which functions over oceans, allowing JetBlue to expand WiFi to nearly its entire route network.

The carrier expects to have approximately a third of its A320 fleet reconfigured by the end of the year.”

We love JetBlue and will go out of our way to fly them anytime we can! Their planes are already the most comfortable and even with a bit less leg room, they will still offer more than most other airlines.
Last November we flew their MINT service from JFK to Aruba and it is the best premium seating we have taken with a domestic airline. We are flying them again this July with our family to Aruba and hope that the new phase 2 planes are available for that trip. I will let you know.

JetBlue had abysmal gate service on my last flight. They told me I had to check my computer bag (!) due to no space on board and then proceeded to let others on with larger bags. When I refused (not only does it have my computer equipment, but also meds) they said I could go on the next flight, leaving in about 10 hours (but would not guarantee the same experience wouldn’t be repeated).

Eventually the gate guard just prior to the plane (I don’t know any better title for this hapless employee) agreed I could try to find space and once aboard the flight attendants told me exactly where to put it. It turns out there was an entire overheard compartment completely empty across from my seat. Others on board then complained that they were forced to gate check their bags.

I used to fly JB more often, and I have no status. They had me board almost last. I know a Captain at JB and passed this on, and while he said this was abnormal it has been known to happen. I’ve never experienced this type of boarding confusion on any airline, even some of the low cost European airlines.

Anyway, I used to really like JB. Not so much anymore. If you had this experience, you wouldn’t either.

I fly JetBlue at least 10 times a year. A large part of the problem is exactly what you indicated, no enforcement of the sizer requirements. On every flight I notice that there are many suitcases way bigger than would fit in the sizer. The problem is only exacerbated on the new A321's that replace A320's, thus 50 more seats with no added scheduled turnaround time. This also contributes to their declining on time percentage
