Has there been an update on the problem with one of the MIRI modes?

Space News, Sept. 22:

"NASA announced Sept. 20 that it had stopped using one of four observing modes on the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on JWST after a mechanism that supports that observing mode “exhibited what appears to be increased friction” during preparations for an observation. Controllers first noticed the issue Aug. 24, and the project convened an anomaly team to study it Sept. 6.

The problem affects medium-resolution spectroscopy observations with the telescope. The other three observing modes — imaging, low-resolution spectroscopy and coronagraphy — are not affected, and observations using those modes of MIRI are continuing."

That's really pretty amazing technology, that JWST is returning images Hubble couldn't see. (Yes, I realize that was the whole point.) But reading the article, it seems they have tasks lined up for JWST that they couldn't ask before, not only because Hubble couldn't do it, but because we didn't have the preliminary imagery that allowed us to ask the right questions. So this kind of science is quite literally building on itself.

You have to love that.

An alum that graduated just a few years before us from our small, private liberal arts alma mater has and is working on the JWST mission. We didn't overlap, but she gave a talk via Zoom recently at the science center on campus and talked us through all of the things that had to go absolutely right for JWST to work the way it does. Truly, an amazing feat of teamwork, mathematics, physics, and engineering. The most important thing about the JWST is that it's basically a time machine.

And don't let anyone tell you that a liberal arts degree is worthless. ;)

I'd never think that. Liberal Arts people are the ones who ask the hard questions. Those with more "focused" degrees tend to get bogged down in the trenches of existing tech. To think outside the box, you have to allow your brain to think outrageous thoughts. Been there done that, and I'm definitely a fan. :D
