I would not be surprised to see some insurance companies start refusing to pay for patients that are not vaccinated.

Agree, since insurance companies don't care about your health, just the profits. They don't bet on lame horses if they can avoid it.

This whole concept is going to be a big hot patato for elected office holders.

1) Those i who are yelling for vaccine mandates are also interested in the concept of universal health coverage.
- is choosing not to be vaccinated going to be the one "original sin" that denies you coverage in " their everyone is covered "health plan ?

2 ) Those who are yelling for free choice and the right not to wear masks- are they going to have to pass laws that give everyone the right to be covered by hospitalization insurance if you get Covid 19 ?

me - I will be laughing out loud

It all boils down to actuarials.

It all boils down to actuarials.

actuarials = money =profits

spent -paid-wasted-saved-pocketed -kept
lobbied for -lobbied against

numbers - nothing more / nothing less

(unless it is you, your family or your friends that are affected)

I don't know if insurance companies are going to do that. They will raise their rates. If they can figure out a way to charge those that are NOT vaccinated more they will, otherwise, they will just raise the rates on all of us. Furthermore, the medicare rates for parts B, C, and D will go up and medicaid costs that we pay for with our taxes will go up.

In the long run medicare will start to run out of money sooner(right now I think it will in 3 years) I guess the one bright finacial spot, if you can call it that, is that more people on Social Security will die due to the virus and stop collecting. So far the date that Social Security will run out of money is a year sooner since so many people stopped working so they stopped contributing. Perhaps with the end of the extra unemployment money people will return to work and the date Social Security will run out of money will be extended.

US spends the largest amount of money on healthcare per capita and per GDP (50% more than the average) and has a lower life expectancy than the other OECD countries (about 3 years less than the average). Nobody seems to see that this is a public health tunnel vision when so many people have died unnecessarily EVERY year for a number of OTHER reasons yet so many human and capital resources are allocated to Covid that would yield much better results elsewhere.

Right. Screw the pandemic, let’s get back to fat shaming and cancer cures...

when you run the US, you can decide priorities. Until then, I think we should stick to trying to end the pandemic since it is a worldwide disaster. It’s not like cancer researchers stopped and nobody writes healthy lifestyle stuff anymore...

I don't see this happening for Covid but maybe they would do this for all vaccines (including Covid). As stated earlier insurance companies will find any means to avoid paying out. More likely I could seem them applying a surcharge premium similar to smoking on life insurance premiums.

By the same token, those that had the virus already should get a discount.

IMHO...That could be considered a pre-existing health condition and might be protected from rate hikes.

The initial Covid Pandemic was truly understandable because of no vaccine availability.

The current Covid Pandemic is not understandable with plenty of vaccine availability.

So the current issue may now extend to treatment; How about "NO VACCINE - NO SERVICE".... Have any facilities started this yet?

I had read that someone had died due to a lack of admittance to a Hospital Emergency Room but the patient did not have Covid. There were no rooms available and he died of a heart issue.

Insurance companies aren't into discounts. If they expect vax, then that is baseline.

I am not sure that is accurate, insurance companies asses both the increase and reduction of risk for a number of factors.

Since you want to divide people into vaxed and unvaxxed you should have no problem with 4 categories (the lowest risk at the top):

1) Previously infected and vaxxed
2) Previously infected and not vaxxed
3) Vaxxed but not previously infected
4) Unvaxxed and not previously infected.

No, I do not want to divide people, you are terribly wrong on that.

I was addressing the "discount" idea only. Take your ideas to the insurers.

You were doing well until you got to the very end. I don't think taking people with Covid off of ventilators (a good part of why treating Covid is so expensive) in order to spend money elsewhere is going to sell well nor up our life expectancy.

It is hard to comment on the rest of your post without getting political. Let me just say, how we compare with other countries would be even worse (quite a bit worse) if it weren't for Medicare. How well we do with regard to life expectancy compared with other first world nations when one looks at just our elderly population compares very favorably. On the other side of the life cycle, we do horribly with regard to newborns. As some say, "How can you not provide free prenatal care?" Not doing so, is one of the OTHER reasons that our numbers are so bad. Free prenatal care would actually save us a lot of medical expense.

It would also improve our maternal death rate, which is abysmal.

Medicaid provides free prenatal care to low income. The vast majority of private practice OBs in our area took Medicaid for OB care. Unfortunately, many do not use it or are noncompliant with instructions, follow up, etc.

Yes and no. I used to show a video of a mother trying to find a doctor who would take Medicaid for prenatal care. After somewhere around fifty phone calls, she gave up. I won't claim that this problem exists everywhere, but this was here experience in a California city.
