just noticed not from Italian website--but multiple news sources now reporting also.
None are U.K. USA etc. so possible fake news. But it would be a big fake. Quotes IT minister of tourism.

I am awaiting confirmation that France has followed suit.

Earlier this week I moved a RCCL cruise booked with a non-refundable deposit to one for 10/2021. Vastly different itineraries- the Jewel is scheduled to sail from Copenhagen, to 3 Norwegian ports, then LeHavre FR, La Coruna & Vigo ESP, Lisbon, Gibraltar with disembarkation near to Barcelona.

Following this now gone cruise, we are scheduled to visit France highlighted by an exchange to Royal Regency Paris, but this will not happen if France closes its borders to us.

Next year's cruise of the Empress is r/t from Montreal- but the inclusion of 2 ports in Newfoundland and a stop at St. Pierre has me looking forward to it.

This is really bad news for Italy. I suspect their economy will be destroyed for many years.

We were scheduled to do a tour of Tuscany this fall, but when I trip down the Duoro river (Spain, Portugal) was cancelled this spring, we rescheduled it in place of the Italy trip. I wouldn't be surprise if our actual trip will turn out to be none of the above.

I don't think necessarily fake news, but a matter of translation/interpretation. A good chunk of the original quotations is in this article:

His statement could equally be interpreted to being saying "international tourism will not happen this year" - not meaning that it will not be permitted, but rather, that it won't actually occur (e.g. the reality is there will be few international tourists for 2020 given the situation).

It also important to understand the context of these comments - ahead of G20 and EU meetings on how to support the tourism sector. Clearly there is a vested interest in ensuring the situation is seen as grave as possible to ensure as much funding as possible is thrown towards the tourism sector.

Bottom line - I think the int'l reports indicating Italy will "remain closed for tourism" the remainder of this year is a bit of an overstretch based on what's been said thus far. No doubt Italy could decide to keep the country closed to international tourists the remainder of the year, what has been said is not fairly interpreted as a definitive decision having already been taken.

Italy, Will bound back stronger than ever. Italy, the cities liked Turin, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Venice and Rome, have survived The Roman Empire, two World Wars and it will survive this Covid 19 virus. The country is cleaner than ever before, pollution is Down more than 50%,. Mark my words . Italy will bound back.

Also, do you really feel that that little country that start with a V the Vatican City
and where the Pope lived is going to let the country fail.

The Vatican City is the smallest country in the world and of the richest country in the world.

I did not find any official pronouncement on the subject.
I interpret it as speculation about international travel and
hence, trying to encourage Italians to travel more locally.

The Vatican City is the smallest country in the world and of the richest country in the world

18th richest in the world PER CAPITA which actually means that it has little in the global scale, certainly not enough to pull Italy out of the doldrums.

Italy did not survive the Roman Empire, it WAS the Roman Empire and it was eventually reduced to a mere shadow of its former self.

Italy was on very shaky ground financially prior to the pandemic, it is going to be hugely devastated by the economic fallout. It desperately requires EU assistance on a massive scale but there is strong resistance to this from the more frugal countries. Without such asssitance I can envisage Italy leaving the EU which was already looking to be a possibility before the pandemic.

Hi, I think your trip to Portugal has a great chance of going. The country is planning to lift some restrictions May 4th and phases. I'll keep you posted.
